Samsung UN65KU7000 vs LG 65UH7700 Performance

Picture Quality

Both of these Samsung UN65KU7000 and LG 65UH7700 already support HDR but none of them featuring Ultra HD Premium Certification. This means display performance that offered by each has not meet all of minimum standardization set by UHD Alliance. Moreover for 65UH7700 that also supports Dolby Vision while Dolby Vision set higher standardization than HDR 10.

hdr-vs-non-hdr-picture

In term of contrast the deepest black level that reached by LG 65UH7700 is about 0.088 nits of black level with contrast ratio 1153:1 while Samsung UN65KU7000 reach better result, that is 0.022 nits of black level with contrast ratio about 4500:1. This means UN65KU7000 offers deeper black level than 65UH7700, even lower than standardization 0.05 nits set by UHD alliance for HDR 10. A weak black level that reached by 65UH7700 certainly caused the use of IPS panel. But even so, for an IPS TVs, what reached by it is not the worst. Otherwise, although it uses IPS panel, LG 65UH7700 offers brighter peak brightness than UN65KU7000 where the peak brightness is achieved on 10% window that is 520 nits while the peak brightness reached by UN65KU7000 is about 400 nits on 100% windows.  Overall, peak white achieved by LG 65UH7700 is brighter than what offered by UN65KU7700. For normal or SDR contents, this may bright enough but for HDR contents, this is still far below 1000 nits of peak brightness required.

HDR vs SDR

Moving on color performance, Although LG 65UH7700 is already powered by quantum dot technology, but it can cover only about 83% of DCI P3 Color space while Samsung UN65KU7000 with active crystal offers more, that is about 94%of DCI P3 color space. This shows UN65KS7000 can delivers wider color gamut than 65UH7700. But in other hands, it only supports 8 bit color panel that means it can delivers only 16 millions shades of color while 65UH7700 already supports 10 bits color panels that can delivers about 1,07 billons shades of colors. With the color performance that offered by each, UN65KU7000 offers wider color gamut than 65UH7700 that means the color will looks more accurate on the screen of Samsung UN65KU7000. But in other hands, LG 65UH7700 offers smoother color gradient with less color gradation.

DCI P3 vs Rec.2020

With display specs that offered by them, we can conclude that both of them doesn’t meet the minimum standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance for Ultra HD Premium Certification. This means although both of them already supports HDR 10 but they cannot display HDR 10 contents fully. Moreover for LG 65UH7700 that also supports Dolby Vision with higher standardizations, of course it also cannot display Dolby Vision fully. Overall, compare between them and when they are displaying HDR contents, LG 65UH7700 offers slight better picture quality than Samsung UN65KS7000. This also applies when they display normal or SDR contents.

Viewing Angle

The main advantage of LG 65UH7700 to Samsung UN65KU7000 is about viewing angle. As we see on comparison table above 65UH7700 comes with VA Panel while UN65KU7700 comes with VA Panel. Although the use of IPS panel makes make contrast and black level weaker but in other sides, it offers much wider viewing angle than VA Panel. This means when the viewers are sitting on the side of TV, LG 65UH7700 offers less color and contrast degradation than Samsung UN65KU7700.

Motion Handling

When handling fast motion images and 24p contents, Samsung UN65KU7000 is powered by Motion Rate 120 technology based on native 60 Hz refresh rate panel while LG 65UH7700 is powered by Tru Motion 240 Hz based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel.  The result, 65UH7700 has faster pixel respond times than UN65KU7700 that means motion when they are displaying fast contents like sports program, video games, or fast action movies, motion blur will be more noticeable on the screen of UN65KU7000 than 65UH7700. This also applies when they are controlling 24p contents like Blu-ray movies, 65UH7700 offers free judder while on 65KU7700, the judder cannot be eliminate completely. But when playing 24p contents via 60p or 60i signals, both of them cannot remove completely the judder.

UHD Up-scaling

Both Samsung UN65KU7000 and LG 65UH7700 do the same good job when up-scaling lower resolution contents to 4K quality. The picture looks same clearly and details in 4K quality even if the sources is 480p contents like DVDs or SD TV. Moreover, if the sources are 720p contents like from Cable HDTV, the result looks clearer and more details. The most perfect performance offered by them when the sources are 1080p movies from Blu-Ray, the 4K picture that produced looks very detail without many losses in details and much better than when they are played on full HD 1080p TVs.

Smart TV

Both of these middle class 65 Inch 4K HDR TVs are also powered by the same attractive and responsive Smart TV Platform. LG 65UH7700 comes with WebOS 3.0 while Samsung UN65KS7700 comes with Tizen OS. In my opinion, both of these smart TV platforms are the best and the second best of smart TV platform in 2016. Both of them are powered by quick processor and memory that makes their performance is fast and responsive. Additionally, their user interface and layout are designed the same intuitive and comfortable to use. Talking about apps provided both of them also provide most useful 4K Entertainment apps like Netflix, Amazon Videos, HuluPlus, and many more. Additionally there are also fast and light web browser, Screen mirroring, game services apps, and many more.

webos-3-0 tizen-os

As their controller, Samsung UN65KU7000 is equipped with Samsung Smart Remote while LG 65UH7700 is equipped with LG Magic Remote. Both of them have built-in microphone for voice navigation functions like change the channels or apps, adjust the volume, change input/ and more. Since Samsung leave Samsung Smart Touch Remote, there is no point and click functions while LG still maintain point and click functions on their Magic Remote.

Sound Quality

Both Samsung UN65KU7000 and LG 65UH7700 are equipped with 2.0 channels speaker system where the power output of each speaker is 10 watts. There is no built-in woofer behind it that course will make poor performance in low frequency or bass. Additionally, the loudness is also not decent enough. But even so, although the sound of LG65UH7700 is designed by HarmanKardon, a big name of premium audio system manufacturer, but the sound quality produced by Samsung UN65KU7000 is slight better. So, to watch Movies of Music shows with good sound quality, an additional external sound bar is highly recommended for them.

Connectivity

Both of them are also equipped with the same inputs and outputs as their connectivity. A slight difference is about the number of USB ports where Samsung UN65KU7000 is only equipped with 2 USB ports while LG 65UH7700 is equipped with 3 USB Ports. While as their major connectivity, both of them are equipped with 3 HDMI ports. Other inputs/outputs behind them are Composite In, Component In, RF (Terrestrial), Ethernet, RS 232c, Audio Out (Mini jack), Digital Audio Out (optical), and built in Wi-Fi where the mount of each is 1.

Conclusion

As mentioned, both of these middle class 65 Inch HDR 4K TVs already support HDR (High Dynamic Range) where Samsung UN65KU7000 supports HDR 10 while LG 65UH7700 supports both HDR format, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision.  Unfortunately, they can only play HDR but cannot display them fully. This due both of them are not labeled Ultra HD Premium that means all of their display specs doesn’t meet the minimum standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance for Ultra HD premium certification. But even so, considering their price, this certainly understandable and at least you can enjoy HDR movies on each of their screen, although not fully and with mediocre quality. But when displaying normal or SDR contents that doesn’t required high contrast ration and wide color gamut, what offered by them can be said good. The other interesting thing hat offered by them is about Smart TV platform where they come with the best smart TV platform in 2016.

S which is a better choice between them? As we have discussed above, in term of picture quality, Samsung UN65KS7000 is superior on black level, contrast ratio, and wide color gamut while LG 65UH7700 is superior on peak brightness, color gradient and viewing angle. When handling motion blur and 24p contents, 65UH7700 is also superior to UN65KU7000. Additionally, although both of them come with the same attractive and responsive smart TV platform, but in my personal opinion, WebOS 3.0 is slight superior than Tizen OS.  And with their difference in performance and features that offered, LG 65UH7700 is sold about $100 more expensive than UN65KU7000. Now the decision come back to your because certainly you have your own opinions about each. But even so, before you decide to choose one of them, there are many opinions from each of their real customers where you can make them as your further consideration.
