We can see on the comparison table above, there are not many difference between LG OLED65E6P and LG OLED65G6P in technical specifications except their audio specs. This indicates that their performance is virtually identical. But even so, this doesn’t mean their performance is really same. We’ll discuss further below about their picture performance.
Both of LG OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P come with “picture on glass” design. This means most of TV’s physical appearance is consist of s single ultra thin a piece of glasses paneling with near free-bezel where the actual OLED display is installed onto. The upper part of OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P looks similar, but if we moving down, this becomes the differences between LG G6 and E6 in term of physical design. On the bottom part of LG E6 looks thicker than LG G6 if viewed from the side. All of components parts and connectivity of E6 series is installed on rear bottom part of the TV. But on OLED65G6P, there is no connectivity ports installed. The thicker bar on rear bottom part of OLED 65G6P is just to support the position of the main screen on the built-in sound bar.
Move down, there are built in sound bar that also has a function as the stand of the TV, but this is what distinguishes them. If viewed from the side, the sound bar of OLED65E6P looks slightly thicker than the rear bottom part of the screen. Under the sound bar, there is minimalist stand extend from the middle of the sound bar for supporting the position of the TV. But for OLED65G6P, the sound bar looks more prominent backward. All connectivity ports of LG G6 are installed on the rear panel of the sound bar. Under the sound bar, there is no stand like on E6 series but the bottom surface is flat.
If we see the specs of their sound bar, this also becomes a difference between them. LG OLED65G6P is powered by 4.2 channels speaker system with 60 watts total power output while OLED65E6P is powered by 2.2 channels speaker system with 40 watts total power output. Can be predicted, sound quality of LG OLED65G6P is heard more impressive and powerful than OLED65E6P.
In addition to we have discussed above, LG as the manufacturer claimed that LG G6 series offers wider range of color gamut and brighter peak white than OLED E6 series, but this is still a long debate. For a while, we can ignore their difference in color gamut and peak brightness because there is not official spec about that released by LG. So, with their difference in physical design and the number channels and power output of their sound bar, of course these are not major differences which influence their overall performance. But with these differences, LG OLED65G6P is sold about $2500 more expensive than OLED65E6P.
In term of performance, whether it is about picture quality, 3D performance, Viewing Angle, Motion Control, or Smart TV, LG OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P is virtually identical. Let’s we discuss one by one each of their performance.
One of the main advantages of OLED TV than LED TVs is it can delivers perfect black level. It allowed because OLED TV has self-lighting pixels. This means each of pixels can turn off/on or dimmed individually with without being influenced by other pixels surrounding. With perfect black level, this allows OLED TV included OLED65G6P and OLED65E6P deliver infinite contrast, where there is no LED TV that can does this job.
In other hand, LG OLED65G65P and OLED65E6P already support HDR 10 and Dolby Vision, two HDR formats that used for this time. HDR 10 is an open sources initiated by UHD alliance while Dolby Vision is a proprietary technology by Dolby Laboratories. To get each of these certifications, a 4k TV must meet certain criteria set by UHD Alliance or Dolby Vision. For this case, they set different standardization. One of the two standardizations set by UHD alliance for HDR 10 is 0.0005 nits of black level, 540 nits of peak bright, more than 90% DCI P3 color space, and 10 bit depth of color while Dolby Vision set higher standardization, 10.000 nits peak of brightness, Rec.2020 color gamut and 12 bit depth of color.
With perfect black level where both of them can reach almost zero nits of black level, of course this is not a big problem for OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P to the black level standardization set by HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. But about peak brightness, the story will be different. The peak of brightness on 2% window reached by both of them is about 650 nits. This value may much below than Top Model Samsung SUHD TV where they can reach up to 1500 nits peak of brightness. But even so, this is much brighter than 540 nits minimum criteria set by UHD Alliance for OLED TV or with other words both of these LG 65 Inch C6 and E6 series meet the minimum standardization of peak brightness set by UHD Alliance.
Moving on color performance, LG uses 4 color sub-pixels by adding white sub pixels on standard RGB sub-pixels as the color technology of their OLED TV lineup including OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P. This allows both of them can delivers more than 93% DCI P3 color space where the minimum standardization of HDR 10 is 90% of DCI P3 coverage. In other hand, both of these LG 65 Inch OLED TVS also support 10 bit depth of color, this means they can delivers more than 1 billion shades of color. Of course this is as defined by UHD alliance for HDR 10 about depth of color.
With all display specs delivered by them, they are entitled to get Ultra HD Certification by UHD alliance. This means when displaying HDR 10 contents, both LG OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P offer HDR experience like the creators intended and of course, HDR picture displayed on each of their screen will look stunning. And this applies not for HDR contents only, but also for SDR content. But in other hand, not all of display specs reached by these 65 Inch OLED TV G6 and E6 series meet the minimum standardization set by for Dolby Vision so this is still far from the expected for Dolby Vision experience. But even so, what offered by LG OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P about HDR Vision still looks stunningly, even for this time, there is no 4K TVs that quite enough to match their performance in Dolby Vision.
As we have discussed above, each of pixels of OLED TV can turn/of /dimmed individually and it doesn’t need a backlight while the use of backlight on LED TV makes picture degradation if viewed from side viewing angle. This allows OLED65G6P and OLED65G6P offers perfect side viewing angle. This mean, wherever you are watching from, you will get the best viewing. Of course, this will make you easier to place your seat in your room to watch TV.
Both of LG OLED65G6P and OLED65E6P are powered by passive 3D technology. The 3D images resulted looks very clear and smooth with very noticeable depth of 3D images. There are also no flickers and no crosstalk noticeable like happened on active 3D technology. This course will make you more comfort when enjoying 3D images. In the box, they include two pair off 3D glasses. But if the number is considered insufficient for covering all members of your families, you can buy separately passive 3D glasses with cheap price. As we know, in addition to passive 3D offers free-flicker and free- crosstalk as its advantage to active 3D technology, it glasses are also cheaper, lighter, and more comfort to use.
The perfect performance is also shown by both LG OLED65G6P and OLED65E6P in handling fast motion picture. There is no motion blur noticeable when you are watching your favorite sports or fast action movies. Additionally, when handling 24p contents via 60i or 60p signals, they are also shown the similar great performance.
The identical performance is also shown by LG OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P when they are up-scaling 1080pp contents or lower to near 4K quality. When up-scaling from 480p sources like DVDs, both of them do a good job. The picture looks clear and details in 4K quality. So does when the sources is 720p contents from Cable/Satellite TV, the 4K picture produced looks better. The better performance offered by them when it do the job to up-scale 1080p to 4K quality. The picture produced looks as smooth and clear as from native 4K sources.
Smart TV also becomes a flagship of both LG OLED65G6P and OLED65E6P. Like other LG’s 2016 Smart TV lineup, both of them also feature WebOS 3.0 as their platform. And we all know, WebOS 3.0 is simple and responsive smart TV with attractive layout design and tons of useful apps and features. Its booting time and selecting between apps is fast. Additionally, the user interface is also designed intuitively and impressively with strip bar across the bottom on the screen. This allows you easier to manage and access your favorite apps. Talking about apps and features provided, there are “Magic Zoom, “Magic Mobile Connection”, Web Browser, Premium VoD Service supports HDR 10 and Dolby Vision like Netflix, Amazon, Vudu already, LG Content Store that provides tons of contents, apps, and games, and many others. And for controlling TV functions or operating your smart TV apps, both of these G 65 Inch E6 and G6 series are equipped with two remote controls at once, LG Magic Remote and Standard Remote Control.
Both of LG OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P are also equipped with the same number of connectivity. There are 4 HDMI 2.0 support HDCP 2.2, 3 USB Ports, 1 Component in, 1 Composite in, 1 RF in, 1 Ethernet, 1 Optical, and 1 mini jack RS232. But as mentioned above, the difference is where all of these ports are installed on. For LG G6 series, all of these ports are installed on rear panel sound bar while for LG E6 series, they are installed on the rear bottom of the main panel.
Picture quality is one of the flagships of LG OLED65GP and OLED65E6P. With stunning performance in picture quality, it offers best experience in enjoying HDR contents. Their display specs are really superb particularly on black level and contrast ratio and meet the standardization set by UHD alliance to get Ultra HD Premium certification. In addition HDR 10 format, both of them also already support Dolby Vision Format where they are not many a 4K TVs that support two HDR formats at once. Although all of the criteria for Dolby Vision cannot be met by them, at least Dolby Vision contents that displayed on each of their screen still looks amazing with perfect black level and wide color gamut. In addition to picture quality, both of OLED65E6P and OLED65G6P are also strong in almost of all aspects of 4K entertainment i.e. viewing angle, motion handling, UHD Up-scaling, 3D performance, Smart TV, and connectivity. Quite frankly, it is very difficult to find the shortcomings of both except their price that very expensive. A bit shortcoming is about their peak brightness is not as bright as what reached by top model Samsung SUHD TV lineup. But even so, this cannot be said a major shortcoming considering peak brightness reached by them is higher than the standardization set by UHD Alliance for HDR 10 format.
So, which is a better choice between them? As mentioned, in the market, LG OLED65G6P is sold about thousands dollar more expensive than LG OLED65E6P. Of course this difference in price is very significant considering they have no major difference that has great impact on their performance. LG may claims their signatures series G6 offers wider range of color gamut and brighter peak white than E6 series, but this is still debatable. Considering their overall performance is virtually identical except their audio performance, I think OLED65E6P is a better choice. But if you do not mind spending extra funds to get a more elegant look and minor differences in performance, of course a better choice for you is OLED65G6P.
