Short Review of LG OLED B6

LG OLED B6 Review

Like other OLED TV, the highlight of LG OLED B6 is about their perfect black level and infinite contrast due it has self-lighting pixel. Because black level and contrast is the most important aspect of picture quality, this makes the picture that produced looks absolutely amazing. Additionally, self-lighting pixel also makes it can deliver wide color gamut. The other perfect performance that offered by OLED B6 is about side viewing angle where it offers far wider viewing angle, even far better than LED TV with IPS panel. Not only that, OLED TV including OLED B6P also offers quick pixel response time that makes it as an excellent performer when handling motion blur. Essentially, the excepting of peak brightness and color gamut, OLED TV including B6 series offers far better performance than LED TV.

In addition to stunning picture quality, LG OLED B6P also offers the ability to play HDR contents. Even not just HDR 10 format only, it also can play Dolby Vision contents. For HDR 10, it even is certified by Ultra HDR certification that guarantees its ability for displaying HDR 10 fully. This means all display specs of OLED B6P meet the minimum recommendation of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance. Moving on its ability when used for playing games, in addition to it offers good motion handling, LG OLED B6 also offers low input lags that makes it is great for games even for games that needs fast reflexes. For watching movies, LG OLED B6 is also a good TV due its ability to remove judder when playing 24p movies from Blu-Ray Player. Nevertheless, its ability to remove judder when it is inputted by 24p movies from Blu-Ray, while when inputted 24p contents via 60i or 60p signals, it cannot remove judder completely.

The other interesting thing that offered by LG OLED B6P series is about their smart TV where with WEBOS 3.0 as the best smart TV platform in 2016, it offers attractive smart TV experience with a lot of interesting and useful apps and easy operation. Moving on sound quality, it offers good sound quality, even better than most TVs, but for better sound experience, an additional sound bar is still needed especially for you who care about sound quality.

Short Review about Samsung KS8000

Samsung KS8000 Review

Although picture quality offers by Samsung KS8000 series is not as excellent as what offered by OLED B6P, but for LED TVs, what offered by KS8000 is including the best in class. Black level is very deep with very strong contrast that makes dark scenes looks well in a dark room. Additionally, with quantum dot technology behind it, it deliver wide color gamut that makes color of the picture displayed looks richly and accurate, no matter it is displaying HDR or SDR contents. One of the advantages of Samsung KS8000 is about peak brightness where it can reach very bright peak brightness that makes the picture produced get very brighter, even far brighter than OLED B6 series or what required for displaying HDR 10 fully. This makes the picture quality looks consistently in a bright room even in a room with a lot of lights. But unfortunately, due it has poor viewing angle, you can enjoy amazing picture quality on the screen of KS8000 only from in front and center of the screen, while if you watch from side viewing angle, the quality of the picture will looks degraded.

Samsung KS8000 also already supports HDR but unlike OLED B6P that supports both of HDR formats, KS8000 supports HDR 10 format only. Nevertheless, with Ultra HD Premium Certification behind it, this means all of its display specs meet all of the minimum standardization of HDR 10 that ensures it is including few serious HDR TVs that can display HDR 10 contents fully.

Although it is not as good as OLED TV, Samsung KS8000 is also a good performer when handling motion blur due its pixel response time is very low. When it is used for watching fast moving images like sports program, a faint trail behind fast moving objects might still slight noticeable, but for most people, this should not be a problem. Additionally, KS8000 also offer very low input lag where combined to low pixel response time, make it great TV for all kinds of games. Additionally, Samsung KS8000 is also a great TV when used for watching 24p movies due its ability for removing judder, even at any sources.

And that is not less attractive than OLED B6, Samsung KS8000 also comes with attractive smart TV platform caller Tizen OS that also provides tons of interesting and useful apps and also operating is a simple. And although not as good as LG OLED B6, sound quality of KS8000 is also good for TVs.

Performance of Samsung KS8000 vs LG OLED B6

Picture Quality

Although both of them are already certified by Ultra HD Premium Certification, but UHD alliance sets different standardization for each OLED TV and LED TV especially on black level and peak brightness. For displaying HDR 10 contents fully, an OLED TV must reach 0.005 nits – 550 nits of brightness range while for LED TVs, the brightness range that should be reach is between 0.05 nits – 1000 nits. In this case, black level reached by OLED B6 is nearly 0 nits with infinite contrast ratio and peak brightness around 790 nits on 10% windows while Samsung KS8000 reach about 0.016 nits of black level with around 6900:11 of contrast ratio and around 1470 nits of peak brightness on 2% windows.  Meanwhile, about color performance, LG OLED B6P can cover about 99% of DCI P3 color space and KS8000 can deliver about 95% of DCI P3 color space. Although from here we can see OLED B6 series offers wider color gamut that makes its picture has richer color, but at least what delivered by KS8000 also exceeds than what required for displaying HDR 10 contents fully that is 90% of DCI P3 color space. One factor again that required by HDR is about 10 bit depth of color where both of them already support 10 bit depth of color that makes their color gradient looks very smooth.

HDR vs SDR

Still about picture performance, both of them are also equally equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine that allows you to enjoy lower resolution contents in near 4K quality sharply and clearly. No matter the resolution of your video sources even for SD 480p like DVDs, the final images in 4K quality produced looks very sharp with smalls detail preserved well and of course the higher resolution of the sources, the final images resulted is sharper and clearer. Considering most of the contents that available in the market still has 1080p resolution or lower, of course this feature is still important.

Additionally, while side viewing angle is a major downside of KS8000, OLED B6 precisely offers perfect viewing angle. Like other TV with VA Panel, the quality of the picture displayed on the screen of KS8000 will start to deteriorate at 20 degrees off center and front. In other hand, the picture that displayed on the screen of OLED B6P looks very consistent, even from extremely side viewing angle. This certainly also becomes the major advantages of LG OLED B6 to Samsung KS8000 that makes it is much better when used in a wide room where there are a lot of viewers watch from multiple viewing angle.

OLED TV vs LED TV Vieiwing ANgle

From all display specs that offered by them, we can see OLED B6 offers far deeper black level, stronger contrast and wide color gamut, while Samsung KS8000 offers brighter peak brightness. This means when used in a dark room or a room with normal light like at indoor, OLED B6P offers better picture quality, no matter they are displaying SDR or HDR contents.  But in other hand, with brighter picture quality, Samsung KS8000 offers more consistent picture quality in a very bright room like showroom or a room with a lot of windows. Meanwhile, although overall picture quality displayed on the screen of KS8000 is not as good as OLED B6, but considering its price is far below, of course what offered by KS8000 can be said amazing and there are not many TV that can beat it.

Motion Blur and 24p Movies Handling

As mentioned, LG OLED B6 with OLED technology offers far quicker pixel response time than Samsung KS8000 that makes it is better when playing fast moving images like sports program. The result, there is no blur noticeable behind fast moving objects on the screen OLED B6. Meanwhile, although the performance of KS8000 is not as good as OLED B6P and a faint trail still noticeable following fast moving objects, but it still can be said good and still better than most of TVs. For watching sports program or fast movies, this should not so be disturbing, especially for most of people with untrained eyes. Meanwhile, when used for video games comfortably, in addition to good motion handling, low input lag is also required. For this case, Samsung KS8000 offers lower input lag than LG OLED B6. This means, when used for playing games, about picture, OLED B6 is better but in term of responsively, KS8000 is better especially for games which need fast reflexes.

LG OLED Motion Handling

While LG OLED B6P offers better motion handling, Samsung KS8000 is better when playing 24p movies. On the screen of OLED B6, the judder can be removed if the source is 24p movies from Blu-Ray, while 24p via 60i signals like movies from satellite TV or 60p signals likes from streaming media, OLED B6 cannot remove judder completely. Meanwhile, with certain setting, Samsung KS8000 can remove judder without add “soap opera effect” from any 24p sources. But because most of people don’t notice about judder, the advantage of KS8000 in term of judder handling is seemed futile.

Smart TV

Both of them come with the same attractive and responsive smart TV platforms. LG OLED B6 comes with WebOS 3.0 while Samsung KS8000 comes with Tizen OS. Their layout design is equally simple and intuitive where navigation between different menus is straightforward and easy. Additionally, once an app is launched, its loading time is very fast. Selecting between apps also feels very responsive on both.   Talking about apps provided, both of them also provide a lot of interesting and useful apps. Most popular apps are also available on both like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Videos, and many more. Additionally, there are also Web Browser, Contents and Apps Store, Screen Mirroring, and many more. Essentially, both of these OS are smart TV platform with most complete apps.

Tizen OS vs WebOS 3.0

Tizen OS vs WebOS 3.0

As the controller, Samsung KS8000 comes with “Samsung Smart Controller” while LG OLED B6 comes with “LG’s magic remote. In this case, Samsung smart controller is simpler with minimalist buttons than LG’s magic remote. Both of them are equipped with built in microphone for voice navigation functionality. Additionally, they are also can serve as Universal remote for controlling other devices connected onto TV via HDMI ports. A bit advantage of LG’s magic remote, there is pointer functionality that makes you more comfort when inputting text, browsing on the internet, and more. Meanwhile, Samsung Remote is not equipped with pointer function like on 2015 model.
