The Similarities and differences between LG OLED C7 and OLED B7

The Similarities

Although LG OLED C7 is sold cheaper than OLED B7, but there are not many differences between them. Coming with OLED Panel that offer infinite contrast ratio and perfect black level, both of them are powered by the number of LG’s most advanced technologies, makes the picture displayed on their screen looks really excellent.  Not just that, OLED panel also offers wide viewing angle coverage that means the amazing picture displayed on their screen well looks consistent from any angle, even when viewed from extremely wide viewing angle.  The other major advantage that offered by OLED is about its extremely low pixel responsive time, result in smooth and clear picture quality with almost no motion blur noticed. Additionally, although not the best, both of LG OLED C7 and B7 also already support wide color gamut and 10 bit depth of colors, makes their renditions of colors is fairly good and their color gradient is smooth, particularly when they are displaying HDR images. And for maximizing their peak luminance, there is Ultra Luminance technology behind it, makes their peak brightness is very bright for OLED TV.

Meanwhile, comings with HDR technology, they are powered by Active HDR as their HDR engine that already support most of HDR formats including HDR 10, HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), Dolby Vision and even Advanced HDR by Technicolor. This is an advantage of both OLED B7 and C7 considering not many TVs which support HDR formats as many as them. Additionally, both of OLED B7 and C7 also powered by Tru 4K Scaler, a great UHD Up-scaling engine that allows you to watch any content with detail as close as 4K resolution. Not just that, there is also a feature named “HDR Effect” that improves the brightness and color range of the picture, allow you to enjoy any content with the quality as close as 4K HDR. And to make you more comfort when enjoying your premium home entertainment with simple attractive and responsive smart TV experience, both of LG OLED B7 and C7 featuring WebOS 3.5 as their smart TV platform.

The difference

Design

As we see on comparison table above, there are not many differences between LG OLED C7 and B7. The first difference between them is about their design, particularly on their stand. The stand of OLED C7 has a brushed metallic finish while the stand of OLED B7 is made of plastic with a translucent support. Nevertheless, although they have different stand design, but both of them feel sturdy and looks nicely on your table. The other difference between them is about where their inputs/ outputs are located. Although they have similar inputs/outputs, but where their inputs/outputs located is different, particularly about their HDMI and USB ports. On the side panel of OLED C7, there are 3 HDMI ports and 1 USB port (USB3.0), while the other inputs/output are located on rear panel. Meanwhile, on the side panel of OLED B7, there are 2 HDMI ports and 2 USB ports and the other inputs/outputs are located on the rear panel. Additionally, their inputs/output layout on their rear panel is also different.

Sound Performance

While both of their differences above don’t have an impact their performance, the other difference is about their audio system where for this case, this certainly has an effect on their audio performance produced. As we see on comparison table above, with original firmware, OLED B7 might not already support Dolby Atmos while OLED C7 already support Dolby Atmos. But with the latest firmware, OLED B7 already supports Dolby Atmos that means it is able to pass by with Dolby Atmos via HDMI ARC port. Nevertheless, since OLED B7 doesn’t have built in sub-woofer and its speaker system is less powerful, to enjoy Dolby Atmos on B7, you need an external system. On the hand, with 2.2 channel speaker system and 40 watts of speaker power, the speaker system of OLED C7 is already qualified to be used for enjoying Dolby Atmos Sound without an external sound system. But even so, adding en external sound bar might be better.

LG OLED B7 vs C7 Performance

Picture Quality

Overall, both of LG OLED B7 and OLED C7 have outstanding picture quality. One of the major strength of picture produced by OLED C7 and OLED B7 is about their infinitive contrast, perfect black level, and excellent black uniformity. As we have mentioned, since OLED TV don’t use backlight and each of their pixel can switch on/off/dim individually, this certainly makes the screen doesn’t emit any light at all when showing totally black. The result, blacks will look perfectly and makes dark scene of images looks excellent, particularly when set in pitch dark room. Additionally, combination of perfect black level and excellent black uniformity of OLED B7 and C7 makes details of images in shadow or dark scene of HDR images looks very clear, result in shadow details of HDR images looks like what intended. As we know, to show shadow details of HDR images fully like what intended, an OLED TV must be able to reach 0.005 of black level or darker. Therefore, since they have nearly 0 nits of black level, this is not a difficult job for OLED C7 and B7 to show shadow details of HDR images like what intended.

oled-vs-led-tv-contrast

While their black level is excellent and there is no LED TV can do it, about peak luminance, what reached by LG OLED B7 and C7 is not as bright as what reached by premium LED TV like Sony X930E or Samsung Q9F. Nevertheless, for an OLED TV, what reached by OLED B7 and C7 is fairly bright, even still brighter than minimum recommendation for OLED TV have been set by UHD alliance to show highlight of HDR images like what intended, that is 550 nits. Overall, their peak brightness is similar where they can reach more than 400 nits when inputted by HDR signals and this is quite bright to fight the glare of ambient light, makes them can fairly good maintain their amazing picture quality when set in bright room. When inputted by HDR signals, they even can reach more than 700 nits in small % windows, makes highlight of HDR images displayed on their screen looks fairly bright. Nevertheless, since most of HDR contents are usually mastered in 1000 – 4000 nits of brightness range, this certain makes them are not able to show highlight of HDR images in their native peak brightness where they have been mastered. But even so, although not as bright as premium LED TV, peak brightness of LG OLED C7 and B7 is fairly well.

Talking about their color performance, both of LG OLED B7 and OLED C7 also have great color gamut and only a bit less than Samsung QLED TV as the TVs with the widest color gamut in 2017. Both of them can show almost all of colors in DCI P3 fairly wheel, even for deep greens where most of modern TVs trouble to show these color fairly saturated. The result, almost of colors of HDR images can be represented fairly well, makes the color of HDR images displayed on their screen looks fairly accurate. Even not just that, most of colors in Rec.2020 where it has wider color coverage than DCI P3 also can be covered fairly well, makes the color of HDR images that mastered in Rec.2020 like Dolby Vision Content can be shown fairly accurate. On other hand, they also have good color volume. The excepting of extremely bright colors, both of them can show their wide color gamut in their brightness range fairly well, even for extremely dark colors. This means, this should be only extremely bright colors of HDR images that cannot be shown fairly well by OLED B7 and C7. Additionally, since both of them already support 10 bit depth of color that means they can deliver more than 1.07 billion shadows of color, both of them can show gradient color of HDR images fairly smooth. Grayscale and darker colors might still have a bit imperfection, but overall, their color gradient is fairly well and most of people might not notice their some small imperfections, so this should not be a problem.

OLED TV vs LED TV Vieiwing ANgle

The other advantage that offered, both of LG OLED B7 and C7 has wide viewing angle coverage that allows them can maintain their excellent picture quality from any angle, even from extremely wide angles. This means, no matter the angle you are watching from, the picture displayed will still consistent excellent, as excellent as when viewed from the front and center. What offered by LG OLED C7 and B7 is even better than LED TV with IPS panel that indeed is maximized for that. With their wide viewing angle coverage, this certainly make both of them are very suitable when used in a wide room where viewers watch TV from multiples angle.

LG HDR Effect

For anticipating the many low resolution contents which available in the market, both of LG OLED C7 and B7 are equipped with great performance 4K Up-scaling engine named Tru 4K Up-Scaler. This allows you to enjoy any low resolution videos as detail as 4K resolution. No matter the resolution of your source, whether it is 1080p videos like Blu Ray Movies, 720p videos like movies from HDTV, or even 480p videos like DVDs movies, all of them will up-scaled nearly to 4K resolution sharply and clearly with many details are preserved well. Even not just that, with new features named “HDR effect”, they are not only able to up-convert any content to 4K resolution, but also improves the brightness and color range of images, so you can enjoy them with the quality as close as possible to 4K HDR.

Motion Handling and 24p Playback

OLED TV Motion Handling

The other excellent performance that offered by LG OLED B7 and OLED C7 is about their motion handling. Their pixel response time is equally extremely low, far lower than the lowest pixel response time of LED TV. The result, when used to play fast moving images like fast movies or sports, the picture displayed on their screen looks smooth and clear with almost no motion blur visible. Following fast moving object, there is only a very short trail where most of people might not notice about that. Combination to their excellent picture, this certainly makes both of them as an excellent TV for sports. In addition to excellent motion handling, both of LG OLED C7 and C7 also do an excellent job when playing 24p movies. No matter the source of the movies, whether it is native 24p videos like Blu Ray Movies, 24p videos via 60i signals like movies from satellite TV, or even 24p videos via 60p signal like movies from streaming device where most of TVS has an issue on this source, all of them are displayed clearly and smoothly on their screen without judder. Nevertheless, to completely remove the judder, you need set a certain setting on their picture setting like set “TruMotion” to “User” and set both “De-Blur” and “De Judder” to “0”. This will remove the judder without adding “soap opera effect”. Additionally, since both of OLED B7 and C7 equally have native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, they certainly already support both 30 fps and 60 fps motion interpolation.

Inputs/outputs

The excepting of where their inputs/outputs are located like what we have discussed above, both of LG OLED C7 and B7 are equipped with similar inputs/outputs. As their major connectivity, there are 4 HDMI ports already support most of HDMI format like HDCP 2.2, ARC, CEC, and more. Additionally, there are also 3 USB Ports (1 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 3.0), 1 RF IN (Terrestrial), 1 Composite In (AV In), 1 Ethernet In, and 1 Digital Audio Out (Optical). In addition to Ethernet in for connecting on the internet, both of them are also equally equipped with built-in Wi-Fi. Additionally, both of them are also equally not equipped with Component In where if you have an old device that uses Component in as its major connectivity, you certainly need an adapter. With all inputs and outputs which provided by them, this certainly is more than enough to cover most of your electronic devices. Meanwhile, discussing about their input lags, both of them also equally have similar low input lags in “Game Mode” and “PC Mode”. With about 21-22 ms of input lags in 1080p and 4K source, this might not as low as UHD 8500 series. But at least, their input lags are quite low to play any kind games so feel responsively without laggy, even for fast paced games which require fast reflexes.

Smart TV

LG WebOS 3.5

As their smart TV, both of them are equally featuring WebOS 3.5, the 2017 version of WebOS. According to the manufacturer, WebOS 3.5 is supported by a new chip that makes its performance is more responsive and faster than last year version. Once you launch an app, the app will load quickly. You also can open more than 1 app at once where selecting between opened apps is very responsive.  Additionally, there are also some new features like Magic Sound Tuning, Magic Link, 360-Degree Video which certainly makes you more comfort when enjoying smart TV experience.  While there are some improvements on its performance and features, the navigation of WebOS 3.5 is still easy and simple.  The interface is divided into three sections: apps, settings, and inputs where each of section has a quick menu, full menu with advanced buttons and its own button on the remote. Additionally, across the bottom of the screen, there is also “Strip Bar” contain quick access to many popular and favorites apps. This certainly makes the navigation is easier and faster.  Meanwhile, discussing about apps provided, WebOS 3.5 comes with a lot of interesting and attractive preload apps like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Videos, Web Browser, Games, and many more. Additionally, although not as complete as Google Play Store and Samsung Apps Store, LG’s apps store also provide plenty of apps, contents, and games where you can directly download them from your TV.

Their remote is a bit large and has a lot of useful smart features and buttons that make you more comfort when navigating. There are dedicated button as the quick access to Amazon Videos and Netflix, allows you to open this app without entering home menu.  This remote also equipped with built-in microphone, allows you to navigate with your voice. The most interesting is about “point and click” feature where the remote has scroll ball that has a function like a mouse on your computer. Additionally, this remote also has universal capability that allows you to control some function of other device connected to your TV via HDMI port with a single LH Magic Remote.

As we have discussed a lot above, their sound performance and design, particularly on their stand, both of LG OLED C7 and B7 have similar performance. They equally have excellent picture quality with strong contrast ratio, perfect black, excellent rendition of colors, and peak brightness.  This allows both of them are able to maintain their excellent picture quality in a room with any light condition. Additionally, coming with HDR technology, both of them already support most of HDR formats and have great HDR performance. They even are equally certified by Ultra HD Premium Certification by UHD alliance that means both them can display HDR 10 images fully like what intended. Additionally, their excellent wide viewing angle also makes both of them can maintain their excellent picture quality from any angle. The other excellent performance offered by LG OLED C7 and B7 is about their motion handling, makes both of them becomes great TVs when used for playing fast moving images or movies. Meanwhile, although not as low as UH8500E series, the input lags of OLED B7 and C7 is low enough to play any kind of games so feels responsively. The other interesting that offered is about their smart TV platform where with WebOS. 3.5, they offer simple, attractive, and responsive smart TV platform.  A bit drawback of them is about their peak brightness where they cannot reach peak brightness more than 1000 nits where HDR images usually are mastered. But even so, this certainly is not really their drawback considering the minimum recommendation set by UHD alliance for OLED TV to display HDR images fully like what intended is 550 nits and what reached by them is brighter than 550 nits.

So, which is a better choice between them? As we have mentioned above, there are not many differences between them. The major advantage of OLED C7 than B7 is just about their sound performance. With an original firmware, LG OLED B7 might don’t support Dolby Atmos, but with a software update, now it also already supports Dolby Atmos.  But even so, to enjoy Dolby Atmos experience on B7, you need an external sound bar considering its sound performance is less powerful and it doesn’t have built-in sub-woofer. On other hand, without an external sound bar, you can still enjoy Dolby Atmos experience on OLED C7 due it has 2.2 channel speaker system with built-in sound bar. Nevertheless, adding external sound bar for OLED C7 might be better.  Now the decision comes back to you according to your preference. If sound performance is not your major priority in buying TV, OLED B7 might be better choice considering it is sold hundreds dollar cheaper but has similar performance and picture quality. Nevertheless, if you don’t mind to spend more hundreds dollar to enjoy Dolby Atmos experience without adding an external sound bar, OLED C7 might be better option for you.
