Samsung Q8C vs Q9F Review (QN65Q8C vs QN65Q9F, QN75Q8C vs QN75Q9F)
Samsung Q9F is the flagship of Samsung’s 2017 QLED TV while Samsung Q8C is the top model of Samsung’s 2017 curved QLED TV. The major difference between them is about the form of their screen where Q8C comes with curved panel while Q9F comes with flat panel. In North America, there is no curved model of Q9, while for Q8 series, there is no flat model. In the market, Q8C comes with 3 screen sizes available including 55 Inch (QN55Q8C), 65 Inch (QN65Q8C), and 75 Inch (QN75Q8C), while for Q9F, there are only 2 screen sizes available including 65 Inch (QN65Q9F) and 75 Inch (QN75Q9F). Since the screen sizes available on both are 65 inch and 75 inch, this comparison certainly is also as true to these sizes (QN65Q8C vs QN65Q9F and QN75Q8C vs QN75Q9F). With the same screen, Samsung Q9F is sold hundreds to thousands dollar more expensive than Q8C. Both of Samsung Q9F and Q8C are equally parts of Samsung’s 2017 QLED TV where the advanced quantum dot technology is the mainstay technology. Supported by Q 4K Color Drive Elite engine, this makes both of them equally have excellent rendition of colors, even can be said the best in 2017. Additionally, come with HDR technology, they also already support HDR 10 format and HLG (Hybrid Log gamma), while for other formats like Dolby Vision or other, they don’t support yet. The difference between Samsung Q9F and Q8C
As we have mentioned above, the main difference between Samsung Q9F and Q8C is about their screen form where Samsung Q8C comes with curved panel while Samsung Q9F comes with flat panel. Meanwhile, we might already know, the excepting to the aesthetic, the use of curved panel and flat panel doesn’t have significant effect on the picture quality that produced. The other difference between Samsung Q9F and Q8C is about the level of the technologies that support them where, where as a higher series, the levels of some technologies which support it are higher than what support Q8C. We can see on comparison table above, there are some technologies that have different level like precision black and Peak Illuminator Pro where Q9F comes with Ultimate Version while Q8C comes with Pro Version. The level of their HDR Engine and Blacks technology is also different where Q8C comes with Q 4K HDR Elite and Q 4K Elite Black, while Q9C comes with Q 4K HDR Elite+ with infinite Array and Q 4K Elite Black+ with Infinite Array. The other differences but have no impact on the picture quality is about the material of the rear cover, where the rear cover of Q9F is made of Plastic while on Q8C, its rear cover is made of a thin metal.
Samsung Q8C vs Q9F Performance
Overall, both of Samsung Q8C and Q9F have similar strong native contrast ratio, make both of them have great performance when used in a dark room. This might not as strong as the native contrast ratio of the lower series like MU6300, but this is strong enough to produce black color looks really black, makes dark scene of images looks excellent, even when they are set in a dark room where the effect of high native contrast ratio is very sensitive. Additionally, the depth of black level produced by both of Samsung Q9F and Q8C is also dark enough to reveal details image in dark scene of HDR images, makes shadow details of HDR images looks excellently like what intended. As we know, to display dark scene of HDR images like what intended, an HDR TV must have 0.05 nits of black level or darker, while with native contrast ratio about 4800:1 for Q8C and 5000:1 for Q9F, both of them can reach about 0.02 nits of black level that means it is very good for showing dark scene of HDR images. But unfortunately, since they use Edge Lit backlight, their local dimming doesn’t work as effectively as Full Array Local Dimming when improving the contrast ratio. When their local dimming is set to “High”, their contrast ratio is not improved significantly and tends to similar to when the local dimming is set to “Low”.
While Samsung Q8C and Q9F have similar native contrast ratio, peak brightness of Samsung Q9F is brighter than Q8C, whether it is inputted by SDR or HDR videos. Nevertheless, their local dimming is equally effective to brighten the small windows so far brighter than large windows. When inputted by SDR, Q9F can reach about 1650 nits of peak brightness in 10% windows size while Q8C can reach about 1300 nits of peak brightness, also in 10% windows sizes. On the other hand, when inputted by HDR signals, peak brightness reached by Q9F is about 1400 nits in 10% window size, while peak brightness reached by Q8C is about 1050 nits, also in 10 % window size. This certainly makes Q9F has better bright room performance and also can show highlights of HDR images brighter than Q8C. Nevertheless, although not as bright as Q9F, peak brightness of Samsung Q8C is also bright enough to fight the glare and show highlight of HDR images brighter than 1000 nits like what intended, makes its bright room performance and ITS HDR performance is also fairly good. As we know, to show highlight of HDR images like what intended, UHD Alliance has set 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation while what reached by them is brighter than 1000 nits that means it is good.
Meanwhile, talking about their color performance, this is a major advantage of Samsung Q8C and Q9F as parts of Samsung QLED TV. Their color gamut even can be said the best, that means they can deliver wider color gamut than other TVS. With Samsung’s advanced quantum dot technology and powered by Q 4K Color Drive Elite engine, color gamut delivered by them can cover nearly perfect of DCI P3 color space. This means almost all colors in DCI P3 color space of HDR images can be shown properly on their screen. Additionally, their Rec.2010 color coverage is also fairly good. They might still struggle to properly show deep green when most of modern TV also struggle with, but at least, they can show better performance than others. Meanwhile, Color Volume of Samsung Q8C and Q9F also can be said the best. Although their color gamut narrows slightly in extremely dark colors, but overall, both of them can show their wide color gamut throughout almost their entire brightness range. This makes the colors of images are represented well on their screen, no matter they are displaying bright or dark scene. Additionally, both of them also have good color gradient when processing 10 bit depth of color of HDR images. This means both of them can deliver more than 1.07 billion shades of colors. The result, color gradient of images looks very smooth and clear. Some little imperfections might still be noticeable in darker shades of colors, but overall, their color gradient is great.
With great performance in all aspects of picture quality, this certainly makes their picture quality looks excellent, no matter the light condition of the room where they are used. Additionally, all of the aspects of their picture quality including contrast ratio, black level, peak brightness, and depth of color also meet the minimum standardization set by UHD alliance for displaying HDR 10 videos fully, make they are able to show HDR images fully like what intended. But unfortunately, since they use VA panel where limited viewing angle becomes its drawback, this certainly also makes both of Samsung Q8C and Q9F have limited side viewing angle coverage. The quality of the picture will look degraded started at 20 degrees off center and front. This means if you don’t want to lose the amazing picture quality displayed on their screen, you should avoid watch TV from an angle.
Meanwhile, for anticipating the many low resolution videos which available in the market, both of Samsung Q9F and Q8C are equipped with UHD Up-scaling engine that has great performance. This value might not as low as OLED TV, but it is including the lowest among LED TVs. The result, when used for playing fast moving images like fast movies or sport program, the picture displayed on their screen looks very smooth and clear with almost no motion blur noticeable. Following fast moving object, there is only a short trail where most of people might not notice about that. Meanwhile, when playing 24p videos, both of Samsung Q9F and Q8C also equally perform an excellent job. No matter the source of the movies, whether it is 24p videos like Blu ray Movies, 24p videos via 60i signals like movies from satellite TV or even 24p videos via 60p signals like movies from streaming device, all of them are shown on their screen smooth and clear with judder-free. Nevertheless, to remove the judder w8ithout adding “soap opera effect”, you must make a certain setting on their “Picture Setting” like the Auto Motion Plus’ must be set to “Custom” and “Judder Reduction” and “Blur Reduction also must be set to “0”. Additionally, since both of them have native 120 HZ refresh rate panel, this certainly makes both of them are able to fairly well interpolate the lower frame rate videos like 30 Fps videos or 60 fps videos.
Both of Samsung Q8C and Q9F are also equipped with similar inputs/outputs. As their major connectivity, there are 4 HDMI Ports and 3 USB ports where this amount is similar to other high end TVs. With about 20-25 ms of input lags, this might not be the lowest among LED TVs, but their input lags is quite low to play any games feels responsively, even for fast paced games that require fast reflexes. Their input lags are similar to LG OLED C7 or other model of Samsung’s 2017 TV lineup, and better than most models of Sony TVs.
As their smart TV, Samsung Q8C and Q9F also features similar smart TV platform, that is Tizen OS 2017 that powered by a quad core processor. Compared to last year version, there is an overhaul on its appearance where in this version, it comes with white them and nice animations, makes its appearance looks nicer and more attractive than older version. Nevertheless, like older version, its navigation is still simple and easy. As the core of the smart TV platform is Smart Hub where on its home screen, there is a ribbon across the bottom of the screen contains quick access to many popular apps and features. With this feature, this allows you open an app without leaving the home screen. While the navigation is simple, its performance is also fast and responsive. Once you launch an app, it will open quickly. Additionally, switching between opened apps also feel very responsively. Meanwhile, talking about apps provided, both of Samsung Q9F and Q8C are equipped with a lot of most popular apps as their preinstalled apps. There are VoD Service like YouTube, Amazon Videos, Netflix, and more, Web Browser, Cloud Game Service like Game Fly or PlayStation Now, Live TV, and many more. Not even just that, there is also Samsung’s apps store that provide tons of interesting and useful downloadable apps where you can directly download them from your TV. As the controller, Samsung Q9F and Q8C are also equipped with similar remote. Their remote has an amazing metal build, makes it looks more elegant. But in functionality, their remote is similar to what used by the lower series like MU8000 or MU9000. The remote is very simple and only have few buttons, even there are no “number button” and “Common Setting Button” like on Sony Remote or LG remote. Nevertheless, it has equipped with built-in microphone and has excellent voice commands which can replace the function of the missing buttons. Their voice command can do many things, even more than other remotes can do. With your voice, you can change inputs, make picture setting, change volume, and many more. On other hand, although not as great Q9F, picture quality and HDR performance offered by Samsung Q8C are also can be said great. While on other features, Samsung Q8C and Q9F have similar performance.
