TVs with Ultra HD Premium certification means all of their display specs meet all of the minimum standardization set by UHD alliance and they certainly are able to display HDR 10 contents fully without any issues.

One of the most advanced technologies behind it is about Quantum Dot Technology that supports wide color gamut and 10 bit depth of color. In other hand, for improving depth f black level and contrast ratio, UN55KS8500 is powered by Edge-Lit backlighting with local dimming technology called Precision Black, UHD Dimming, Ultra Black technology, and Auto Depth Enhancing. LG 55UH8500 Review

LG 55UH8500 is part of UH8500, the second top models of LG’s 2016 SUHD TV lineup. But unlike UN55KS8500 that certified by Ultra HD Premium, 55UH8500 is not featuring Ultra HD Premium this means there is one or more aspect of its display specs didn’t meet the minimum standardization of HDR 10. But instead, it also supports Dolby Vision format. One of the advantages, it is including few HDR TVs that also come with 3D technology. The other advantage, it comes with IPS panel that offers wide range of viewing angle.

Like Samsung SUHD TV, Quantum Dot technology also that made the difference between LG’s SUHD TV lineup and UHD TV lineup. As mentioned, it is a technology that designed for improving color gamut. For processing HDR Signal, 55UH8500 is powered by HDR Super with Dolby Vision engine. Performance of Samsung UN55KS8500 and LG 55UH8500

Picture Quality

One of the most important aspects of picture quality is about black level. The deeper black level, the contrast ratio will stronger and picture produced will look better. Samsung UN55KS8500 with all technologies support them can reach about 0.015 nits of black level with contrast ratio about 7150:1. Additionally, with all technology behind it, LG 55UH8500 can reach about 0.84 nits of black level with native contrast ratio about 1200:1. From here we know, black level is reached by UN55KS8500 is deeper and contrast ratio is much stronger than what produced by 55UH8500. Meanwhile, for displaying HDR 10, it needs 0.05 nits or lower of black level. This means, UN55KS8500 meets this standardization while 55UH8500 doesn’t. Can be ascertained, in dark scenes, detail of HDR images will be revealed more on the screen of Samsung UN55KS8500 than LG 55UH8500. Additionally, when displaying SDR contents in a dark room, with deeper black level and stronger contrast, UN55S8500 also offers better picture quality than 55UH8500. But this only applies when the viewers watch TV from front and center of the screen while when the viewers watch TV from wide viewing angle, the result will be different.

hdr-picture

Otherwise, for maximizing peak brightness, Samsung UN55KS800 powered by Peak Illuminator Pro while LG 55UH8500 is powered by Ultra Luminance technology. The result, 55UH8500 can reach about 550 nits of peak brightness on 25% window while UN55KS8500 even reach much better that is about 1500 nits of peak brightness on 2% and 10% window. Although what reached by 55UH8500 is not as bright as peak brightness of UN55KS8500 but for displaying SDR content in a bright room, it is already quite bright. But even so, for displaying HDR contents fully, it is not still quite bright. You need to know, for displaying HDR 10 contents fully, a HDR TV must reach at least 1000 nits of peak brightness. Meanwhile, for Samsung UN55KS8500, there is no issue. Peak brightness reached is very bright, even far beyond minimum peak brightness required by HDR 10. This means, UN55KS8500 is a good performer in displaying SDR and HDR contents in a brighter room.

Moving on color performance, both of them are powered by Quantum Dot Technology. The result, both of them deliver wide color coverage. While HDR 10 need at least 90% of DCI P3 color space as its minimum standardization, LG 55UH8500 also can deliver about 90% of DCI P3 color space. Meanwhile, Samsung UN55KS8500 even can deliver wider color gamut that is about 94% of DCI P3 color space. This means, UN55KS8500 offers slightly wider color gamut than 55UH8500 that makes in certain color, picture produced by UN55KS8500 looks slightly better than produced by 55UH8500. Additionally, in term of depth of color, UN55S8500 and 55UH8500 also support 10 bit depth of color. But even so, according to trustworthy unofficial source, 55 UH8500 is not 10 bit panel but only 8 bit dithering. Separated from the debate about this, color gradient of the picture produced by 55UH8500 when processing 10 bit signal look very smooth, as smooth as UN55KS8500 that comes with true 10 bit panel.

samsung-quantum-dot

Overall, Samsung UN55KS8500 offers better picture quality than LG 55UH8500, no matter it is displaying HDR or SDR contents in a dark room or bright room. But we should remember, 55UH8500 comes with IPS panel where black level reached is not as deep as what reached by VA panel. Overall, LG 55UH8500 offers good picture quality for IPS TV, even contrast and peak brightness are including the best for IPS TVs.

Viewing Angle

LG IPS Panel

The use of IPS panel might make contrast and black level of LG 55UH8500 is not as strong and deep as what offered by Samsung UN55KS8500 that uses VA Panel, but in term of viewing angle, it is much superior. Although it is not as perfect as what offered by OLED TV, but at least, viewing angle coverage of 55UH8500 is much wider than offered by UN55KS8500. Additionally, although UN55KS8500 comes with Curved Panel claimed can improve viewing angle, the quality of the picture still look to deteriorate started at 20 degrees off center and front. Meanwhile, on the screen of 55UH8500, the picture will begin to deteriorate at 35 degrees off center and front. This has to do when you are setting your seat and TV in your room to get the best viewing

Winner: 55UH8500

UHD Up-scaling

4K UHD Up-scaling

Both of these Samsung UN55KS8500 and LG 55UH8500 are also equipped with the same great performance UHD Up-scaling Engine. Both of them equally do a good job when up-scaling lower resolution contents to near 4K quality. 480p contents like DVDs or SD TV looks good with a fair amount of details once they are up-scaled. Additionally, when the source is 720p like HD TV, the final image that is resulted also looks very sharp. Let alone when the source is 1080p like Blu ray movies, once up-scaled, they look very sharp without any lost of small details. This great performance certainly is still important considering most of the contents that available in the market still have lower than 4K resolution.  In other hand, streaming directly 4K contents also need high speed internet and a big bandwidth so this will more comfortable if streaming lower resolution content and then rely on their UHD Up-scaling engine to watch them in 4K quality.

Motion Handling

When handling fast moving images, Samsung UN55KS500 is powered by Motion rate 240 while LG 55UH8500 is powered by TruMotion rate 240 Hz technologies. Both of these technologies are based on the same native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. But even so, as the resulted, UN55UH8500 offers slightly quicker pixel response time that means it handle motion blur slight better than UN55kS8500. When they are displaying sports program, video games, or fast movies, in certain scenes, you will still see a small faint trail behind the fast moving objects on the screen of UNKS8500 while on the screen of 55UH8500, a small faint trail is not noticeable.  Although 55UH8500 offers slight better performance, overall, performance of UN55KS8500 also can be said great. In other hand, when they are playing 24p contents like Blu ray movies, both of them also offer great performance. A good hob also offered by them when playing 24p contents via 60i signals. This means the picture displayed looks clearly with judder-free. But when playing 24p contents via 60p signals like movies from streaming media UN55KS8500 offers better performance than 55UH8500. Despite you can remove judder on the screen of 55UH8500 by enabling “TruMotion”, this will add “Soap Opera Effect”. While for UN55S8500, you just need set “Auto Motion Plus” to custom and both sliders to “0”, the judder will be removed without adding “Soap Opera Effect”.

Winner: 55UH8500

3D technology

As mentioned, LG 55UH8500 is powered Cinema 3D technology based on passive 3Dtechnlogy while there is no 3D technology behind Samsung UN55KS500. This difference is very clear so it doesn’t need further explanation. But separated from their differences, with 3D passive 3D technology behind it, 55UH8500 offers clear and detail 3D images with tons of depth. The 3D images resulted is also comfortable for eyes considering there is no flicker and crosstalk like with active 3D TV, as long as you watch directly in front of the screen. Additionally, it also gives some benefits on their 3D glasses where they are lighter, cheaper, battery-free and more comfortable to use. A bit downside, each of eyes only receives a half resolution of the images.

Winner: 55UH8500

Connectivity

As their major connectivity, Samsung UN55KS8500 is equipped with 4 HDMI ports while G 55UH8500 is equipped with 3 HDMI Ports. Additionally, they are equally equipped with 3 USB Ports. In addition to these major inputs outputs / outputs, there are also 1 Ethernet, 1 Digital Audio Out (Optical), 1 analog audio out, 1 RF (Tuner), and RS 232. The difference, UN55KS8500 is not equipped with Composite in and Component in while 55UH8500 is still equipped with these ports. The other difference is where they are located. All connectivity ports of 66UH8500 are installed on the rear panel of the screen while forUN55KS8500, 4 HDMI Ports, 2 USB Ports, and RFs installed on separated box called “One Connect Box”. Talking about their input lag, UN55KS8500 offer lower input lag at 1080p and 4K signal, particularly with HDR than 55UH8500. But even so, although not as low as input lag of UN55KS8500, input lag of 55UH8500 is also quite low for any fast-paced 10080p game. But for HDR gaming, it is not as good as UN55KS8500.

Sound Quality

As we see on comparison table above, Samsung UN55KS8500 is equipped with 2.1 channel speaker system with built in woofer while LG 55UH8500 is equipped with 2.2 channel speaker also with built in woofer designed by HarmanKardon a big name in premium audio manufacturers. Both of them are also powered by the same 40 watts total power speaker. Frequency response of both is the same as good. But talking about Total harmonic distortion, UN55UH8500 offers much better than UN55KS8500. But for you who care about sound quality and to get better sound quality, both of them still need additional sound bar.

Winner: 55UH8500

Smart TV

Both of them feature the same attractive and responsive Smart TV Platform. Samsung UN55KS8500 comes with Tizen OS while LG 55UH8500 comes with WebOS 3.0 Their user interface is designed the same simple and comfortable to use, Tizen OS comes with a “ribbon” contains favorites and popular apps is located at the bottom across the screen while WebOS comes with Strip Bar also located at the bottom across the screen. There are also Screen Mirroring, Web Browser, Games Services, Contents Store, and many more. Essentially, both of them are the best smart TV which provided tons of interesting and useful apps.
