Sony X900E vs X800E Performance
The use different type of panel, backlight, and dimming technology makes they have significant difference in contrast. Sony X900E with VA panel, direct LED backlight, and Full Array Local Dimming has strong native contrast ratio and excellent black uniformity, even when local dimming is disabled. On the other hand, the contrast ratio and black uniformity of Sony X800E with IPS panel, Edge Lit Backlight, and frame dimming technology can be said poor. This certainly has a big impact on the picture quality produced by them, particularly when set in a dark room. Dark scenes look excellently on the screen of X900E. While on the screen of X800E, dark scenes look very disappointing with black looks tend to grey and color look in accurate. Additionally, with about 0.016 nits of black level, this is also quite dark to display shadow details of HDR images like what intended, while with about 0.1 nits of black level, this certainly is not dark to show shadow details of HDR images like what intended. Most of colors in DCI P3 color space of HDR images can be shown fairly saturated. But like most of other TVs, both of them also have a bit issue when showing saturated green. Additionally, Sony X800E also has a bit issue when showing saturated blue. Meanwhile, talking about their color volume, Sony X900E also has far better color volume than X800E. Although it has a bit issue when showing very dark deep color, but overall, X900E can show its wide color gamut at its brightness range. On the hand, Sony X800E can only show its wide color gamut for brighter color, while when showing very darker colors, its color gamut narrows significantly. Additionally, since its contrast ratio is poor and cannot show absolute black, this also makes dark colors doesn’t looks dark enough. Otherwise, about color gradient, Sony X800E precisely has a bit better color gradient than X900E. On the screen of X800E, color gradient looks nearly perfectly without any major color banding, while for X900E, it might still have a bit imperfection in dark blue and green, but this should not be a serious problem. Its color gradient even is still better than most of other TVS, even for high end TVs.
With 4K X-Reality Pro Engine behind them, both of Sony X800E and X900E do a great job when up-converting lower resolution to near 4K quality. No matter the resolution of the source, whether its Blu Ray movies with 1080p resolution, Movies from TV cable with 720p resolution, or even low resolution videos like DVDs movies with 480p resolution, the final image in 4K resulted is sharp and smooth with a lot of details are still preserved well.
