Sony X850E series is a part of Sony’s 2017 4K HDR TV lineup while X850D series is the predecessor, a part of Sony’s 2016 4K HDR TV lineup.  In the market X850D series is available on 4 screen sizes including 55 Inch (XBR55X850D), 65 Inch (XBR65X850D), 75 Inch (XBR75X850D), and 85 Inch (XBR85X850D). Meanwhile, X850E series as the successor is only available on 2 screen sizes including 65 Inch (XBR65X850E) and 75 Inch (XBR65X850E). As the newer model, Sony X850E certainly comes with some upgrades and additional features that make its performance better. So, what new features that offered by X850E and what are the differences to the predecessor X850D?

Short Review of Sony X850D (XBR55X850D, XBR65X850D, XBR75X850D, XBR85X850D)

Sony X850D ReviewSony X850D series is the middle class of Sony’s 2016 4K HDR TV lineup. Like other TVs that released in 2016 where the big focus is about HDR, X850D also comes with HDR technology where it already support HDR 10 only. For producing superior picture quality for its class, it is powered by the number Sony’s most advanced technology which become its main technology like 4K Processor X1 Engine, TriLuminos Display, MotionFlow XR960, and more. One of the advantages of X850D series is it offers good viewing angle due it uses IPS panel technology.

Overall picture quality that produced by Sony X850D series is good. Nevertheless, its performance when used in a dark scene is not as good as the competitors with VA panel due its black level is not too deep and contrast is not too strong. Dark scene will look tend to grey and of course this will reduce the naturalness of the image. But even so, once it is used in a room with decent light, the picture that displayed on its screen will look well. Color is very accurate due great performance of TriLuminos Display that can deliver wide color gamut.

Come with HDR technology, it offers new experience in enjoying movies with more detail picture in shadow or sun highlighted effect. But unfortunately, its HDR performance is still limited due its black level and peak brightness is not quite enough to meet the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 contents fully. However, it is still better than when it is displaying SDR contents. In addition good picture quality for its class, Sony X850D is also a good TV when used for watching sport program or fast movies due its great performance in handling motion blur. It also has ability to remove judder at any source that makes it is a good TV for watching movies. In other hand, input lag is still too high, especially with a 4K signals. For casual games, this might be not an issue, but for fast paced games, it will feel a bit laggy. And that is not less attractive is about Google Android TV where there are a lot of useful and interesting apps available.

Short Review of Sony X850E (XBR65X850E, XBR75X850E)

Sony X850E Review

As the successor of X850D, Sony X850E series comes with some upgrades and new features. One of the major upgrades over the predecessor is about its picture engine where it comes with new 4K HDR Processor X1. Compared to old 4K Processor X1 engine, there are some additional technologies embedded inside it that makes its performance is better. In addition to new 4K HDR Processor X1  engine, it is also powered by the number Sony’s advanced technologies like Motion Flow XR960, TriLuminos Display, 4K X-Reality Pro, and more. Additionally, X850e series also comes with IPS panel that makes its side viewing angle is good.

Talking about its picture quality, overall, it is far difference to the predecessor X850D series due the difference in type panel that used. Dark room performance is good due its strong black level and contrast. Unlike the predecessor X850D, where blacks looks tend to grey in a dark room, blacks on the screen of X850E still looks very dark.  Color looks very accurate and this cannot be separated from great performance of TriLuminos Display behind it. But unfortunately, its peak brightness is not too bright so when used in a very bright room, the picture that displayed on its screen will be degraded by the glare. Additionally, the peak brightness reached by X850D is also not quite enough for allowing you to enjoy HDR contents fully.

Like the predecessor X850D, Sony X850E also only supports HDR 10 only and may be in future, there is a software update for supporting HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma). But because its black level and contrast are limited, this also makes its HDR performance is limited especially on its contrast and brightness. As we know, the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 contents is 0.05 nits of black level and 1000 nits of peak brightness while black level and peak brightness reached by X930E is not quite deep and bright. But because HDR contents is mastered with wider brightness range and wider color gamut, of course when inputted by HDR signals, the picture that produced will still looks better then when it is inputted by SDR. And like the predecessor X850D series, Sony X850E also offers some great performance on some features like good motion handling for fast moving images, great UHD Up-scaling Engine, good 24p playback, low input lag, and attractive Google Android 2017 Smart TV platform.

The differences between Sony X850E and X850D

Picture Engine

As we see on comparison table above, the major difference between them is about their picture engine where Sony X850D comes with 4K Processor X1 while Sony X850E comes with new 4K HDR Processor X1. The differences between new and old processor is about the technologies that embedded inside them where inside the old 4K processor, there are Dynamic Contrast Enhancer and Precision Color Mapping. Meanwhile, technologies which are embedded inside the new 4K processor are Dynamic Contrast Enhancer, Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR, and Object-based HDR Remaster technology. The addition of Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR makes X850E offers better and smoother color gradient especially when inputted by HDR signal with 10 bit depth of color. Meanwhile the addition of Object-based HDR Remaster technology inside new 4K HDR Processor X1 allows you to enjoy every contents even SDR contents with the quality as close as possible to 4K HDR on the screen of Sony X850E. This makes picture displayed on the screen of X850E looks more real and natural than what displayed on the screen of X850D.

Technology Embedded 4K HDR Processor X1 (New) 4K Processor X1
Dynamic Contrast Enhancer Yes Yes
Precision Color Mapping No Yes
Dual Data Base Processing No No
Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR Yes No
Object-based HDR Remaster technology Yes No

Type of Panel

The other major difference between Sony X850E and X850D is about the type of panel which they use. You need to know, XBR X850D series use IPS panel that makes it has wide viewing angle. But on the other side, this makes its dark room performance is poor due its poor black level and contrast. Meanwhile, Sony X850E particularly 65 inch model (XBR65X850E comes with VA panel where this makes black level and contrast produced is strong and also makes its a dark room performance is good. But in other hand, its side viewing angle is poor. For more details about the difference between IPS and VA panel, please click here

Sony X850D vs X850E Performance

Picture Quality

Comes with a difference in type of panel, this makes their dark room performance is different. Sony X850E series with VA panel can produce deep black level and strong contrast that makes its a dark room performance is good. Blacks look very dark even in a dark room that makes darker picture still look natural. Meanwhile, since X850D uses IPS Panel, this makes its black level and contrast is not strong as what reached by X850E. The result, blacks of images will looks tend to grey when used in a dark room. But even so, once it is used in a bright room, blacks will look darker and this will make picture look better. Additionally, black level and contrast produced by Sony X850D are also not quite deep and strong for displaying HDR 10 contents fully. As we know, for displaying HDR 10 contents fully, this needs at least 0.05 nits of black level while what reached by both of X850D is not darker than 0.05 nits. While for X850E, there is no issue since it can reach black level darker than 0.05 nits.

In other hand, peak brightness reached by both of Sony X850E and X850D is average. This means it is only quite enough for displaying SDR contents in a room with normal lights. Meanwhile, when used in a very bright room where there is sunlight coming in through the windows, its peak brightness is not quite bright to fight the glare. Additionally, the maximum brightness reached by both of them is also not quite for displaying HDR contents fully. As we know, the minimum recommendation of peak brightness for displaying HDR 10 contents fully is 1000 nits, while peak brightness reached by them is still lower than 1000 nits, even less than half.

While black level and peak brightness reached by Sony X850E and X850D is not so deep and so bright, color delivered by them is very accurate. This cannot be separated by great performance TriLuminos Display behind them. Work along with X1 engine, it can deliver wide color gamut, even exceeds than 90% of DCI P3 color space as the minimum recommendation of HDR 10. This makes the color of the picture displayed on their screen looks very accurate and more real, even when displaying HDR contents that require wider color gamut than SDR contents. Additionally, supported by the ability to processing 10 bit signals, both of them can deliver about 1.07 billion shades of color that makes color gradient of the picture produced looks very smooth without color banding. As the comparison 8 bit TV delivers around 16 millions shades of color. This difference is certainly very far at all.

Like other models of Sony 4K TV lineup, both Sony X850D and X850E are equally equipped with great performance of UHD Up-scaling engine. The combination of 4K X-reality Pro and X1 engine work together to get the best result when up-scale the lower resolution contents to near 4K quality. The result, the final images in 4K resolution that produced looks sharply and clearly, even when the source is low resolution contents like movies from DVDs. And of course, the higher resolution of the sources, the final images in 4K resolution that produced will look sharper and clearer with small detail preserved better.

IPS Panel

On the other hand, Sony X850D with IPS panel offer better side viewing angle coverage than X850E series with VA panel. The result, when watched from side viewing angle, picture quality produced by X850D looks more consistent than X850E. Meanwhile, the contrast and color of the picture displayed on the screen of X850E will look degraded started at 20 degrees off center and front. And with better performance in side viewing angle, this makes X850D is better than X850E when used in a wide room where the viewers watch from multiple viewing angle.

Note: Since XBR75X850E has an IPS panel, this comparison certainly is only for 65 inch model.

Motion Handling and 24p Playbacks

Due pixel response time of both are very quick, this makes both of Sony X850E and X850D offers smooth picture quality when used for watching fast moving images like sports or fast movies. Following fast moving object, there is only very little blur so for most people, this should not be a serious issue. Additionally, both of them are also great TVs for watching movies due their ability to remove judder when used for playing 24p contents particularly when playing 24p movies from Blu Ray Player. Nevertheless, when playing 24p movies via 60i/60p signals, X850D offers better performance than X850E. This means, regardless the source of movies is Blur Ray Player, Streaming Media, or even Satellite TV, X850D is able to display the movies with judder-free. While for X850E series, it cannot remove the judder when the source is 24p movies via 60i like movies from satellite TV or via 60p signal like movies from streaming media.

Inputs/Outputs

Talking about Inputs/outputs which provided by Sony X850E and X850D, there is no difference. Both of them equally equipped with 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports as the major connectivity. Like most of TVs that available in the market, their HDMI ports already supports all format that required for HDMI connection like HDCP 2.2, CEC, Audio Return Channel, and more. Additionally, there are also 2 AV In (Composite In) and 1 Component In for providing connections with your old devices, Ethernet and Built In Wi-Fi for connecting in the internet, RF IN (Antenna In) for receiving terrestrial broadcasting, Digital Audio Out (optical) and more. The improvements of X850E as a newer model over X850D is about their input lag where X850E series has lower input lags than X850D at any sources. This means, no matter you are playing 1080p games, 4K games, or even HDR games, Sony X850E is more comfortable to use than X850D series.

Smart TV

Sony Android TV

Sony Android TV

Basically, both of them feature similar smart TV platform that is Google Android TVs. The difference is about their version where X850 series comes with latest version of Google Android TV or 2017 version while X850D comes with 2016 features. As a newer version, there are some upgrades and updates that make it is more attractive and its performance is better. Nevertheless, on newer version, the navigation still feels a bit confusing and not as simple as the competitors like Samsung Tizen OS or LG WebOS. In other hand, one of the advantages of Google Android TV is about apps which provided. There are a lot of attractive and useful apps provided like YouTube, Amazon Videos, Netflix, HuluPLus, and Google ChromeCast for screen mirroring, Google Voice Search, PlayStation Now, Web Browser, and many more. Additionally, with Google Play Store, you can download tons of apps, games, and contents from a lot of developers. As we know, Google Play Store is the most complete apps store for this time where there are a lot of developers where there are a lot of apps, games, and contents that released every day.

As the controller, remote control that used by them is also identical. Their remote is fairly large and equipped with a lot of soft buttons. One of the advantage, this remote is equipped with built in Microphone for voice navigation and voice search functionality. Additionally, this remote also can be used for controlling other devices connected on your Sony TV with the help of IR blaster included in the buying package.

Conclusion

Each of Sony X850E and X850D has advantages and disadvantages to the each other due each of them use different type of panel. As we have discussed a lot above, X850D with IPS panel has wider viewing angle that makes it is better when used in a wide room. Additionally, X850D also better performance when playing 24p movies especially when via 60i and 60p source. Meanwhile, X850E with VA panel offer dark black level and contrast that makes it is better when used in a dark room. Additionally, superior on black level and contrast also makes its picture quality and HDR performance of X850E is better than X850D. Meanwhile, Motion Handling, UHD Up-scaling and Smart TV which offered by them are similar and become the oher strong points that offered by Sony X850D and X850E.

So, which is a better choice between them? As a newer model that comes with some additional technologies, of course Sony X850E series is a better choice between them. In addition to its offers better picture quality and HDR performance due it has stronger black level and contrast, the other advantage that offered is about Object-based HDR Remaster technology inside 4K HDR Processor X1 that offers you to enjoy any content with the quality as close as possible to HDR quality on the screen of X850E. Additionally, the improvement at input lags also makes it is more comfortable when used for playing games. But because it has just been released, of course its price is still expensive and for this time when I was writing this comparison, X850E including XBR65X850E and XBR75X850E is sold hundreds dollar more expensive then X850D (XBR65X850D and XBR75X850D). But usually, this price will tend to go down as time goes by. In other hand, this doesn’t mean X850D is a bad choice. Its cheaper price with performance that is not far different is become its advantage. But to get it, you should buy it immediately, considering it is a 2016 model and of course, it will be discontinued by the manufacturer. Finally, before you decide to choose one of them, whether it is for 65 inch or 75 inch, there are a lot of opinions from a lot of people who have bought one of them where you can make as your further consideration.
