Samsung Q7FN and Sony X900F are middle to higher model of 4K HDR LED TV which available in the market. Q7FN is the successor of Q7F and also the flat model of Samsung QLED TV 7 series or the third top model of Samsung’s 2018 QLED TV lineup. Meanwhile, Sony X900F is the successor of X900E, the second-top model of Sony’s 2017 4K HDR TV lineup. But in 2018, for a while, Sony doesn’t yet launch the successor of X930E/X940E as the top model of Sony LED TV lineup in last year, so for this time, Sony X900F is the top model of Sony’s 2018 4K HDR LED TV. In the market, Samsung Q7FN only comes in 3 screen sizes options including 55 inch (QN55Q7FN), 65 Inch (QN65Q7FN), and 75 Inch (QN75Q7FN), while X900F comes in more screen sizes options including 49 Inch (XBR49X900F), 55 Inch (XBR55X900F), 65 Inch (XBR65X900F), 75 inch (XBR75X900F), and 85 inch (XBR85X900F). Short Review of Samsung Q7FN
As we have mentioned above, Samsung Q7FN is the successor of Q7F, the flat model of Samsung’s 2017 QLED TV 7 Series. As a part of Samsung’s QLED TV lineup, metal quantum dot technology becomes the mainstay technology of Q7FN. With this technology, it can deliver excellent wide color gamut, close to 100% of DCI P3 color space that certainly makes its color reproduction is awesome. Still like the predecessor, on its panel, Samsung Q7FN still uses VA panel with edge lit LED backlight and local dimming technology. Sony X900F vs Samsung Q7FN Performance
Contrast and Black Level
Essentially, both Samsung Q7FN and Sony X900F has excellent native contrast ratio. Both of them equally have more than 5000:1 of native contrast ratio, makes both of them can produce deep black level. And combined to their excellent black uniformity, this certainly makes both of them can produce excellent dark scene, even when they are set in a dark environment. As we know, the impact of native contrast ratio in a dark room is very sensitive where to show blacks so looks really black, this need high native contrast ratio. Additionally, both X900F and Q7FN also equally have good reflection handling. Combination of bright peak brightness and good reflection handling makes the picture displayed on their screen will look remain amazing though they set in a bright room with a lot of ambient light. This means, if you often watch TV in a bright room, both of them might be a good choice for you.
Meanwhile, compare between them, which one brighter is depending on the source. Overall, when the source is SDR contents, Samsung Q7FN has a bit brighter peak brightness while when the source is HDR contents, peak brightness of Sony X900F is brighter. Nevertheless, although X900F has brighter peak brightness when playing HDR contents, but for a short time, peak brightness of Q7FN is actually far brighter, even far brighter than 1000 nits, particularly on small window size. Additionally, its Rec.2020 color coverage also can be said well, make colors of HDR images mastered in Rec.2020 like Dolby Vision images also can be shown fairly accurate. Meanwhile, although its color volume is also not as good as Q7F, but its color volume is only limited by its own color gamut. This means, it can show its wide color gamut at its entire brightness range, even darker colors also can be shown as saturated as brighter colors.
While the color gamut and color volume of Samsung Q7FN is superior, Sony X900F can show better color gradient. With Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR technology, Sony X900F can process 10 bit contents excellently. The result, color gradient of 10 bit videos looks very smooth without any major color banding is visible. On the other hand, color gradient of Q7FN is not as good as X900F. When playing 10bit contents, some faint bandings are visible almost everywhere, especially at blue and dark green. Fortunately, most people don’t notice this much, so this should not be a problem for normal usage.

Side Viewing Angle
Although both Samsung Q7FN and Sony X900F are including the high-end model of 2018 TV lineup, this doesn’t mean they don’t have a major problem. Like other TVs with VA panel, both of them also limited viewing angle coverage. This means, when viewed from the side, the picture displayed on their screen doesn’t look as good as when viewed from the front and center. Started at less than 20 degrees off center and front, color will shift and black level will degrade. And from the wider angle the picture viewed, the color shift and black level degradation will be more striking. Color accuracy is reduced while black will tend to look grey. Even at a bit wider angle, the brightness is also reduced. Essentially, the picture will look degraded when viewed from the side and the wider angle you watch from, the picture will look worse. If you do not want to lose the amazing picture quality displayed on their screen, the seating arrangement in such a way in your room is needed if you often watch TV with your family.

Motion Handling and 24p Playback
Both Sony Q7FN and Sony X900F also equally has excellent motion handling when they are playing fast moving images like sports, fast movies or fast games. Although X900F actually has a bit lower pixel response time than Q7FN, but essentially, their pixel response time are equally excellent for minimizing motion blur of fast paced contents. The result, when they are playing fast moving object, there is only a short ghosting trail following fast moving object where for most people, they might not notice this much. The blur that might visible is more caused by persistence than motion. Meanwhile, since both of them have local dimming technology, to dim the backlight, both of them equally use PWM Dimming System that might be able to cause flickers. For this case, they use different dimming frequency where Sony X900F uses 720 Hz of dimming frequency while Samsung Q7FN uses 240 Hz. But since X900F use higher frequency, this certainly makes flickers are less visible on its screen than on the screen of Q7FN.
Meanwhile, for reducing persistence blur so make motion looks clearer, particularly when playing 60 fps contents like sports or others, both of them have an Option BFI (Black Frame Insertion Mode) that flickers the screen at lower frequency, usually 120 Hz or 60 Hz. To activate the BFI mode, on Q7FN, you must set “Auto Motion Plus” to “Custom” and enable “LED Clear Motion” while on X900F, you must set “MotionFlow” to “Custom” and increase the “Clearness” Slider. The BFI mode of both is very effective to help motion looks clearer. But on the other hand, since they use lower dimming frequency, for people who sensitive to flickers, this certainly also makes flicker more visible. A bit advantage of Q7FN, it can flicker the screen at 60 Hz that helps 60fp contents like sports, video games looks clearer. On the other hand, X900F only can flickers at 120 Hz and cannot flickers the backlight at 60 Hz, so this will not help much to reduce the visible duplications in 60 Hz content. But even so, some people might prefer to no flicker, so this should not be problem for some people.
When playing 24p Movies, Sony X900F can do a bit better job than Samsung Q7FN, particularly when playing 24p movies via 60i signal. Additionally, most people might not sensitive to judder, so this should not also a serious issue that should be considered.

Both Sony X900F and Samsung Q7FN are equally equipped with 4 HDMI ports as their major connectivity. All of their HDMI ports are equally support HDCP 2.2 and CEC. Meanwhile, on Q7FN, all of its HDMI ports also already support HDMI 2.0 full bandwidth while that support ARC (Audio Return Channel) is only HDMI 4. Both of them also equally don’t have Component In. The result, playing any games on Q7FN will feel very responsive without laggy, even for fast paced games that need fast response. Meanwhile, the input lags of Sony X900F are depending on the resolution. When the source is 4K, although not as low as Q7FN, its input lags are still low enough for playing fast paced 4K games so feels responsively. But a bit unfortunate, its input lags at 1080p resolution is a bit too high and only low enough for playing casual full HD games while for fast paced games, this might be a bit disappointed.

As their smart TV platform, Samsung Q7FN is featuring Tizen 2018 that powered by a quad core processor while Sony X900F is featuring Google Android TV version 7.0. Like last year version, Tizen OS has intuitive layout with a “ribbon” at the bottom across the screen contains shortcuts to popular and favorite apps, menu setting and many more. Once a shortcut is highlighted, a pop window will appear above it contain advanced menu or recommendation contents. You can also organize the “ribbon” in accordance with your wishes. You can move the most popular or your favorite apps to the front while the apps that rarely to be used can be moved to the back. This makes the navigation feels easily. On the other hand, the layout of Google Android is also very attractive but quite crowded. However, since the preinstalled apps provided are a lot of, this makes the home screen is very long and to see everything, you need make a lot of scrolling. This certainly makes the navigation is not as easy as Tizen OS. Meanwhile, their performance is also equally not too consistent. When you launch an app, at certain times, it will open quickly with smooth animation, but at other certain time, there is a lag about one-two second before it open and the animation is choppy. Nevertheless, color gradient deliver by Q7FN is not as smooth as X900F. In term of peak luminance, it is depending on the source. When the source is SDR, Q7FN has brighter peak brightness while when the source is HDR, peak brightness of X900F better. Nevertheless, although when playing HDR contents, overall, Sony X900F has brighter peak brightness, but its peak brightness is still below 1000 nits, it is not able to show the highlight of HDR images at 1000-4000 nits of brightness like the intended. On the other hand, although when playing HDR images, its peak brightness is not as bright as X900F, but for a short time, it can reach peak brightness far brighter than 1000 nits, even brighter than 1500 nits, particularly at small window size. This certainly makes Q7FN can show highlight HDR images at 1000-4000 nits like the creator intended. Meanwhile, the other advantage that offered by X900F is about its pixel response time and its ability in handling 24p movies, while the other advantage offered by Q7FN is about its input lags.
So, which one is a better choice between them? As we have mentioned, the excepting of 75 inch (XBR75X900F vs QN75Q7FN), with the same screen, Samsung Q7FN is sold more expensive than Sony X900F. But essentially, if your main consideration in buying TV is color performance, Samsung Q7FN certainly is a better choice. But if want a TV with deeper black level or brighter peak brightness, you can do with X900F.
