The Differences between Samsung UN49KS8000 and UN49KU7000
As we see on comparison table above, there are many major differences between Samsun UN49KS8000 and UN49KS7000. We can see, there are only UHD Up-scaling and Smart TV which become the similarities between them. This is due each of these Samsung 49 Inch TV put in different category of Samsung’s 4K 2016 lineup, UN49KS8000 is part of SUHD lineup while UN49KU7000 is part of UHD lineup. Let’s discuss one by one about their differences
Picture quality is the major difference between Samsung UN49KU7000 and UN49KS8000. It is due the difference in technology and the level of technology that used by each. One of major differences between them that have great impact on their picture quality is about the color technology behind them. As we see on comparison table above, Samsung UN49KS8000 is powered b quantum dot panel while Samsung UN49KU7000is powered by Active Crystal Color. This makes UN49KS8000 can cover more color gamut than UN49KU7000. From trustworthy unofficial sites call, UN49KS8000 with quantum dot panel behind it can cover about 96% of DCI P3 color space while UN4KU7000 with active crystal color cover about 93% of DCIP3 color space. Although both of them cover more than 90% of DCI P3color space of minimum wide color gamut required by HDR 10, this makes the color delivered by UN49KU8000 is richer than UN49KU7000. In other hand, both of already support 10 bit depth of color that means, they can deliver about 1.07 billion shades of color that makes their color gradient is very smooth without gradation or color banding. But even so, although both of them already support 10 bit panel, color gradient of the picture hat displayed on the screen UN49KS8000 looks smoother than UN49KU7000.
The other main difference between them is about the technologies that support their contrast range. Although both of them are equally powered UHD Dimming, there are still precision black and Ultra Black technology behind UN65KS8000. This makes UN49KS8000 can reach about 0.016 nits of black level with white reference about 110 nits. Native contrast ratio hat reached is about 6900:1. Meanwhile, UN49KU7000 reach 0.018 nits of black level with 99 nits of whites reference and deliver about 4500:1 of contrast ratio. From here we can see, UN49KS800 offers deeper black level with higher native contrast ratio that course will influence to the quality of the picture that produced. Bu even so, black level reached by them can be said very deep for LED TVs. As the reference, to display HDR 10 fully, a HDR TV must reach 0.05 nits of black level or lower. And what reached by UN49KS8000 and UN49KU700 is much lower than minimum standardization of HDR 10 and of course it is very good.
Still about picture quality, the other difference between them is about peak brightness reached by them. Because both of them already support HDR, certainly it is very important considering peak brightness is one of important aspect of HDR. You need to know, for displaying HDR 10 fully, a HDR TV at least need 1000 nits of peak brightness. With Peak Illuminator pro behind it, Samsung UN49KS8000 can reach about 1500 nits of peak brightness about 14000 nits of pea brightness on 2% and 10 % window. The whole of screen is also still look bright with about 500 nits of peak brightness. This makes the picture that displayed on its screen looks very bright, even in bright room .Meanwhile, Samsung UN49KU7000 only reach about 400 nits of peak brightness on 100% window. Because there is no local dimming behind it, peak brightness will look dimmed to 240 nits at 10% windows and 145 nits on 2% window. This means, when displaying SDR contents in dark room, the picture displayed on the screen of UN49KU7000 look pretty good. But because the lack of peak brightness, the quality of picture will looks reduced in brighter room. Additionally, it is also still far from 1000 nits what needed for displaying HDR 10 contents fully.
Additionally, UN49KS8000 with Ultra Clear Panel Ultimate technology also offers much better reflections than UN49KU7000. Reflections on the screen of UN49KS8000 looks very faint while on the screen of UN49KU7000 looks more diffuse.
From all display specs that offered by them, we can see Samsung UN49KS8000 meets all of the minimum standardization of HDR 10 and compliant with Ultra HD premium Certification, so it can display HDR 10 contents fully. Meanwhile, peak brightness reached by Samsung UN49KU7000 is not quite enough to display HDR 10 contents fully. Overall, quality of the picture produced by UN49KS8000 looks much better than what delivered by UN49KU7000.
The other advantage of Samsung UN49KS8000 than UN49KU7000 is when they are handling motion blur and 24p contents. As we see on the table above, Samsung UN49KU7000 is powered by Motion Rate 120 based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel while UN49KS8000 is powered by Motion Rate 60 Hz. The result, pixel response time of UN49KS8000 is lower than UN49KU7000 that makes motion blur will slight more noticeable in certain scenes on the screen of UN49KU7000 than UN49KS8000 when they are displaying fast moving images like sport or fast movies. But overall, motion blur is handled very well by them. The significant difference in performance is shown by them when they are handling 24p contents. UN49KS8000 offers judder-free when it is processing 24p sources like Blu Ray Movies. Additionally, by setting “Auto Motion Plus” to custom and both slider to 0 when they are playing 240 contents via 60p signals and 60i signals, judder can be removed completely without adding soap opera effect. The contrary performance is shown by UN49KU7000. When it is displaying 24p contents via 60i or 60p signal, judder cannot be removed completely, even for native 24p contents like Blu ray movies.
As we see on comparison table above, Samsung UN49KS8000 equipped with 4 HDMI Ports and 3 USB ports as their major difference while Samsung UN49KU700 is equipped with 3 HDMI ports and 2 USB Ports. But even so, their input lag is the same very low on both 1080p and 4K resolution even with HDR signal. Of course, they are very great used for any type of games. The other differences, UN49KS8000 is not equipped with Composite In (AV) and Component in while UN48KU7000 is equipped where the amount of them is 1. In addition to them, both of them are equipped with 1 Ethernet Port, 1 RF In, and 1 Digital Audio Out (optical). The main difference between them is about where HDMI port and USB port located. All ports of UN49KU7000 are located on outside of rear panel while all HDMI Ports, 2 USB Ports and RF of UN49KS8000 are located on One Connect Box. The rest, they are installed on rear panel along with terminal for One Connect Box cable.
Samsung UN49KS8000 is equipped with 2.1 channels speaker system with 40 watts total power speaker system while Samsung UN49KU7000 is only equipped with 2 channel speaker system with 20 watts total power speaker. With 2 built-in woofers behind UN49KS8000, it makes low frequency or bass of sound produced heard steadier than sound of UN49KU7000. The frequency response of both is just as good, but about total harmonic distortion, UN49KU7000 even offers better. Overall, sound quality offered by them is not bad even pretty good for TV. But even so, adding an external sound bar will offers much better sound experience for you.
Viewing angle both of them is equally very poor. It is due poor viewing angle is the native characteristic of VA panel used by them. The quality of the picture will start to deteriorate at 20 degrees off center and front. Color of the picture will looks faded as well as the contrast, it will look degraded. And the wider of viewing angle, the picture quality will looks be worse. But even so, as long as you set your seat and TV rightly, this is not a big problem for you.
Both Samsung UN49KU7000 and UN49KS8000 are good performers in up-scaling lower resolution contents to near 4K quality, no matter the resolution of the sources. 1080p sources like Blu Ray movies will looks very sharp and well detailed in 4K quality. As well as when the resolution of the sources is 720p like from Cable or Satellite HD T, the picture still looks very sharply in 4K quality. Even when the sources 480 like DVDs, the picture still looks sharply without losing many smalls details. Although it is not a major, this certainly is still needed considering most of the contents that available in the market still have lower resolution than 4K, more over for older contents. So, no matter the resolution of video sources, you can see them in 4K quality sharply on the screen of UN49KS8000 and UN49KU7000.
As their Smart TV platform, both of them feature Tizen Operating System. Additionally, to make its performance is quick and responsive, it is powered by a quad core processor. User interface is designed minimalist with a slight touch of Android TV OS but high capability so makes it comfortable to use. Apps are organized “on ribbon” where a features or contents suggested bar will popping up above it if you highlight one of the apps. Additionally, the load in time of each of apps is also very quick once you launch it. Additionally, Tizen OS also allows you to open multitask where the time for selecting between app is also very quick. Talking about apps, Samsung Tizen OS provides a lot of most useful and popular apps like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Videos, and many more. Additionally, there are also fast and light web browser, Samsung apps and contents store, and many more. Not only that, for you a gamer, it also provides apps for games streaming service that allows you to play tons of games without a console like Play Station Now by Sony and Gamefly.
Finally, as the controller, both of Samsung UN49KU7000 and UN49KS8000 are equipped with “Samsung Smart Remote” that has ability to control most of devices that connected with your TV via HDMI Ports. There are tons of Infra-red commands saved on its data base where once a device connected to your TV, there is a wizard appears that will guide you through the process. And of course, you will be able to control your TV and all devices connected via HDMI with a single remote. But unfortunately, it is only limited on basic functions, for advanced functions, you still need their default remote.
As we have discussed a lot above, picture performance is the major difference between Samsung UN49KS8000 and UN49KU7000. The significant difference is about their peak brightness where peak whites of UN49KS8000 is much brighter than UN49KU7000. Of course, this has an impact on their picture quality that produced especially when they used in bright room. Additionally, since peak brightness becomes one of the most important aspects of HDR, of course this also has a great impact on their HDR ability. It is confirmed by Ultra HD Premium Certification featured by UN49KS8000 while UN49KU7000 is not compliant with it. The other major advantage of UN49KS8000 is about their ability in handling 24p movies where with Motion Rate 240 behind it, it offers judder-free when playing 24p contents while judder cannot be removed from the screen of UN49KU7000. But overall, performance and features that offered by them is great for each of their class.
So, which is a better choice between them? As mentioned, in the market Samsung UN49KS8000 is sold about $450 more expensive than UN49KU7000. Considering picture quality and performance that offered by them, I think this is a decent value for this difference. Now, the decision comes back to you according to your preferences. If you care about HDR performance, of course Samsung UN49KS8000 with Ultra HD Premium Certification is a better choice. But if you are quite satisfied with performance that offered by UN49KU7000, what offered by UN49KU7000 is also pretty good.
