Sony X930E vs X900E Review (XBR55X930E vs XBR55X900E, XBR65X930E vs XBR65X900E)
Sony X930E and XBR900E are parts of Sony’s 2017 4K TV lineup. In the market, X930E is available on 55 Inch (XBRR55X930E) and 65 Inch (XBR65X930E) while X900E is available on 49 inch (XBR49X900E), 55 Inch (XBR55X900E), 65 Inch (XBR65X900E), and 75 Inch (XBR65X900E). Because sizes which available on both are 55 Inch and 65 Inch, this comparison certainly only applies on both screen sizes (XBR55X900E vs XBR55X930E) and (XBR65X900E and XBR65X930E). Whether it is 55 inch or 65 Inch, when I was writing this comparison, X930E series is sold hundreds dollars more expensive than X900E. Nevertheless, their price is not fixed and still could change at any time. So, what are the differences between them so X930E series is sold more expensive than X900E?
Short Review of Sony X900E (XBR49X900E, XBR55X900E, XBR65X900E, XBR75X930E)
Sony X900E series is the second top tier of Sony’s 2017 X Series under X930E series. Still focus on HDR, it already supports most of HDR formats that available in the market, HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma). But for HLG, it needs a firmware update becasue until now, the standardization of HLG has not been confirmed. One of the major advantages of X900E is about its picture engine called new 4K HDR Processor X1 where inside, it is embedded the number of technologies such as Dynamic Contrast Enhancer, Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR, and Object-Based HDR Remaster technology. This makes the picture that produced by Sony X900E series looks amazingly for its class.
In addition to Dynamic Contrast Enhancer that is embedded inside its picture engine, Sony X900E features Full Array Backlighting Technology and X-tended Dynamic Range Pro X5 where combination between these technologies produces deep black level and strong native contrast ratio. Because of Black level and Contrast is the most important aspect of picture quality, with deep black level and strong contrast, this makes the picture that displayed on its screen looks very amazing. Additionally, combination of TriLuminos Display technology and Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR delivers wide color gamut that makes the color of the picture looks very accurate with very smooth color gradient, even for hard-to-reproduce color. Once again is about Object-Based HDR Remaster technology that allows you to enjoy all contents even SDR contents in near 4K HDR quality, so the picture that displayed on its screen looks more natural and more realistic. Additionally, the other strong points of Sony X900E is about its great UHD Up-scaling engine where with 4K X-Realty Pro behind it, it allows you to enjoy all contents in near 4k quality sharply and clearly, even for low resolution contents like DVDs movies with 480p resolutions. And with Motionflow XR960 based native 120 Hz refresh rate panel behind it, it allows you to enjoy fast moving images like sports program clearly and smoothly with virtually no motion blur.
The other interesting thing that offered by Sony X900E is about Google Android TV as its smart TV platform where it is very attractive and responsive. Additionally, there are also a lot of interesting and useful apps provided like VoD Apps, Web Browser, ChromeCast for screen mirroring, Cloud Games, and many more. Sony X900E also equipped with IR blaster technology that allows you to control other devices connected onto your TV with Sony Remote.
With a lot of advantages that offered by Sony X900E, this doesn’t mean it doesn’t have downsides. As a VA TV, poor side viewing angle is a major downside of X900E. Additionally, there is also no 3D technology behind it.
Short Review about Sony X930E series (XBR55X930E, XBR65X930E)
One level above X900E, Sony X930E is the top model of Sony’s 2017 X Series. Sold hundreds dollars more expensive than X900E, Sony X930E offers more amazing picture quality and the number of additional features. In addition to HDR 10, it also already supports Dolby Vision and HLG. To produce amazing picture quality, X930E is powered by 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme where this picture engine is first used on the flagship of 2016 model Z9D series. In addition to the technologies that embedded on 4K HDR Processor X1 of X900E, there are other technologies embedded such as Precision Color Mapping and Dual Database Processing technology. This makes its performance when processing images is better than on 4K HDR Processor X1.
Unlike X900E series where it uses Full Array Local Dimming technology as its backlight, Sony X930E series is powered by improved Edge-Lit Backlight with local dimming technologies called Slim Backlight Drive Plus. This technology is designed for improving black level so deeper and peak brightness so brighter while TV is still Ultra Slim. Combine it with Dynamic Contrast Ratio and X-tended Dynamic Range X10, this makes black level and contrast that produced is very deep and strong while peak brightness is very bright. Meanwhile, for delivering accurate color and smooth color gradient, Sony X930E depends on TriLuminos Display that supported by Precision Color Mapping and Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR inside the X1 Extreme Engine. This makes color of the picture displayed on its screen looks very accurate with very smooth color gradient that makes the picture looks more realistic and natural. Additionally, like on X900E, Object-Based HDR Remaster technology also makes you enjoy all contents even SDR contents in near HDR quality. Meanwhile, combination of 4K X-Reality Pro Engine and Dual Database Processing technology behind it allow you to enjoy lower resolution contents closer to native 4K quality clearly. And like X900E series, for handling motion blur and 24p movies, Sony X930E series is powered by MotionFlow XR960 technology based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel that offers you smooth picture quality with almost no motion blur when you are watching fast moving images like sports program or fast movies.
Sony X930E series also features latest version of Google android TV like what featured by X900E series. It is very attractive and responsive with a lot of interesting and useful apps provided. The advantage, most of people might be already familiar with Android OS on their Android Smart TV where its core is identical to Android OS on your smart phone. The difference is certainly about their controller where on X930E, it use remote controller as the controller while on Android TV, they use touch screen.
And not much different to X900E series, poor viewing angle also becomes its major advantages due it uses VA Panel. This means when you watch TV from side viewing angle, the picture will looks degraded. Additionally, X930E is also not equipped with 3D technology where it becomes its major downside over its predecessors X930D series.

The differences between Sony X930E vs X900E
There are several differences in technology and features between them that make Sony X930 Series offer better picture performance and are sold hundreds dollars more expensive than Sony X900E, whether it is for 55 inch or 65 inch. Let’s start what are the major differences between them?

One of the major differences between Sony X900E and X930E is about their picture engine where X900E is powered by 4K HDR Processor X1 engine while X930E series is powered by 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme engine. That distinguishes between these picture engine is about the technologies which embedded inside them where inside the 4K HDR Processor X1 of X900E there are Dynamic Contrast Enhancer, Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR, and Object-Based HDR Remaster technology. Meanwhile, inside by 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme of X930E, in addition to the technology which embedded on 4K HDR Processor X1, there are also additional technologies such as Precision Color Mapping and Dual Database Processing technology. Precision Color Mapping makes the color that produced looks more accurate and precision while Dual Database Processing technology makes the picture that produced looks closer to the clarity of 4K while unwanted noise is reducer more, no matter the resolution of the sources. The differences in picture engine makes Sony X930E series offers closer to clarity of 4K HDR picture quality than Sony X900E, especially when they are inputted by lower resolution contents.

Theoretically, Full Array LED Backlight with local dimming of X900 is better than Edge-lit backlight with local dimming. Nevertheless, because it has more dimming zones and powered by the number of Sony’s most advanced technology, Sony X930E series with Slim Backlight Drive Plus offers better performance in improving black level, brightness, and contrast than X900E series with full array local dimming.
The level of X-tended Dynamic Range Pro
Although both of SonyX930E series and X900E series are equally equipped with X-Tended Dynamic Range Pro technology, but the level of the technology of each is different. As we see on comparison table above, X930E is powered by X-tended Dynamic Range Pro X10 that claimed can improve brightness range up 10 times than conventional LED-Backlight TV. Meanwhile, X900E series comes with X-tended Dynamic Range 5X that claimed can improve the brightness range up to 5 times than conventional Led backlight TV. You need to know, X-tended Dynamic Range technology is Sony’s most advanced technology that precisely control backlight output so the bright scenes looks bright while black area looks darker. Combine to Dynamic Contrast ratio makes black area of the picture that displayed on its screen looks very dark while bright area looks very bright.
As we see on comparison above, like 2016 models, Sony X900E only supports HDR 10. In other hand, in addition to HDR 10, Sony X930E also already supports Dolby Vision. Meanwhile, about HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), because the standardization of HLG has not confirmed, for a while, they don’t support HLG yet. But once HLG’s standardization is confirmed, there will be an update software for them that already support HLG.
As we see on comparison table above, both of 55 Inch and 65 inch of X900E series is equipped with 2.0 channel speaker system with 10 W + 10 watt audio output and Bass Reflex Speaker Type. Meanwhile, X930E series is equipped with more power full sound system where 55 inch size (XBR55X930E) series has audio output 5 W + 5 W + 10 W + 10 W + 10 W + 10 W while 65 inch size (XBR65X930E) has audio output 10 W + 10 W + 10 W + 10 W + 10 W + 10 W. As the main speaker, it uses Front-face 3-way speaker (tweeter/mid-range/woofer). From audio specs that featured by them, we can already suspect, X930E series certainly offers more powerful and impressive sound quality than X900E series. Nevertheless, because these speakers system are installed on a slim TV, of course its performance is less than the maximum, so for you who care about sound quality, the additional sound bar is still recommended.
Sony X9300E vs X900E Performance
With the advantages on some features and technologies such as their picture engine, the level of X-tended Dynamic Range Pro, and backlighting technology, Sony X930E certainly offers better picture quality and performance than X900E. This is in accordance with the hundreds dollar more that you must spend to get X930E series.
Overall, picture quality of Sony X900E and X930E is good for each of their class. This is due each of their picture quality component is strong, whether it is about their contrast, color, or brightness. Additionally, Object-Based HDR Remaster technology insides their picture engine allows you to enjoy SDR contents as close as possible to HDR quality. Nevertheless, sold about hundreds dollar more expensive, X930E should offer better picture quality than X900E.
Let’s start from contrast and black level that produced by them because it is the most important aspect of picture quality. Although essentially, black level and contrast reached by them is deep and strong, but compare between them, X930E series is slight superior to X900E. This is due the different level of X-tended Dynamic Range and different backlighting technology behind them. Theoretically, with the same amount of dimming zones, FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) offer better performance than Edge-Lit Led with Local Dimming in producing contrast and black level. However, X930E comes with Sony’s advanced Edge Lit Backlight technology called Slim Backlight Drive Plus where it is designed in such away for producing better contrast than conventional FALD. In other hand, the number of dimming zones of X930E is more than X900E. That’s why black level and contrast produced by X930E is deeper and strong than X900E. But nevertheless, although not as deep and strong as what offered by X930E, what produced by X900E is still better than average.
Additionally, peak brightness reached by Sony X930E is also brighter than X900E. Because X930E has brighter picture, this also makes it can fight the glare better than X900E. This makes the quality of the picture that displayed on the screen of X930E looks more consistent than X900E where they are used in a very bright room with sunlight coming in through the windows. Additionally, it also makes X930E offers better HDR performance than X900E. You need to know, peak brightness reached by X930E exceeds 1000 nits, even still brighter than predecessor X930E, while although it is still above average, peak brightness reached by X900E is still below 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation for displaying HDR 10 fully. Whereas we know, peak brightness is the most important aspect of HDR and for displaying HDR10 fully, it needs at least 1000 nits of peak brightness. Dolby Vision even needs far brighter peak brightness.
Moving on color performance, because both of them are powered by the same technology that is TriLuminos Display, color of the picture delivered by them is relatively identical and already support wide color gamut that required for displaying HDR contents fully. As we know, a minimum recommendation color gamut that should be delivered by an HDR TV is around 90% of DCI P3 color space while both of them can cover more than 90% of DCI P3 color spaces. Of course this makes the color of the picture displayed on each of their screen looks very saturated and accurate even for hard-to-reproduce color. Nevertheless, because X930E has deeper black level and brighter peak brightness, in certain scenes especially picture in shadow or sun highlighted effects, color of the picture displayed on the screen of X930E looks more accurate than X900E.
Additionally, both of them also offer great performance when up-scaling lower resolution contents to near 4K quality. This cannot be separated from great performance 4K X-Reality Pro Engine combine to 4K HDR X1 engine. No matter the resolution of your video sources, even for DVDs with 480p resolution, the final image in 4K resolution that produced looks very sharp and clear. Nevertheless, compare between them, Sony X930E series offers slight better performance than X900E series. This is due Dual Data Base Processing Technology inside the X1 Extreme as its picture engine.
With deeper black level and brighter peak brightness, Sony X930E offers better picture quality when used in a dark room or very bright room, especially when they are displaying HDR contents. Nevertheless, although not as great as what offered by X930E, picture quality that offered by X900E is good for its class, even still above average. In a dark room, detail of images in dark scenes looks details and blacks looks absolute black. In other hand, in a bright room, the quality of the picture looks consistently due the glare can be drowned out by its bright peak brightness. But as mentioned, although above average, it is still below 1000 nits as the minimum recommendation of HDR 10 that means its peak brightness is not quite bright for displaying HDR. While what offered by Sony X930E meets all of the minimum recommendation of HDR 10 that makes its HDR performance is great.
The only downside of Sony X900E and X930E is about side viewing angle. Due both of them use VA Panel, both of them have poor side viewing angle. This means if you are watching TV from side viewing angle started at 20 degrees off center, the contrast will be degraded and color will looks faded. So, to get the best viewing, you must set in such away the position of your TV and seats.
Essentially Sony X900E and X930E is powered by similar levels of technology when they are handling motion blur and playing 24p movies, that is MotionFlow XR960 based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. The result, both of them offers smooth picture quality with virtually no motion blur when displaying fast moving images like fast movies or sport program. Additionally, both of them are also good TVs when used for watching movies. This means when you use them for watching movies, judder can be removed completely, no matter the sources of the movies, whether it is Blu Ray, Satellite TV, or Streaming Media.
Essentially, both of them are equipped with similar inputs/outputs. There are 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports as their major connectivity where their HDMI ports already support what required for HDMI connections for this time like HDCP 2.2, CEC, Audio Return Channel, and more. Additionally, there are also 2 AV IN (Composite In) and 1 Component in for providing the connection with your old devices, 1 RF In (Antenna In), Ethernet, Digital Audio Out (optical), and more. Meanwhile, talking about their input lags, overall, both of them also have low input lags. Nevertheless compared between them, the input lags of Sony X900E is lower than X930E particularly with a 1080p signal. This means Sony X900E is a better than X930E when used for playing 1080p games especially for fast paced games. Playing 1080p fast games on X930E might be a bit disappointing because its input lag is too high with a 1080p signal.. Meanwhile, despite with a 4k signal, input lag of X900E is also still lower than X930E, but the input lag of X930E is also quite low for playing any kind of 4K games, even for fast paced 4K games or HDR games.
Basically, both of them feature the same smart TV platform that is Google Android TV version 6.0 or 2017 version. Compared to last year version, there are some upgrades and updates that make its performance is better. User interface and layout are designed very attractive. However, like last year models, Navigation of Google Android TV is not as simple as other smart TVs platform like Tizen or WebOS. One of the strong points of this Smart TV platform is about apps that provided where in addition to there are a lot of interesting apps like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Videos, Web Browser, PlayStation Now, ChromeCast, and many more as default apps, you can also download tons of apps, contents, games, and more on Google Play Store. This is similar to Google Play Store on Android OS of your Android smart phone, despite certain apps cannot be installed on the TV due the difference about their controller.
As the controller, Sony X900E and X930E use Sony Basic Remote like what used by last year models. The remote is quite large and has a lot of buttons. It is also equipped with built-in microphone for voice search or voice navigation functionality. The interesting, both of them are also equipped with IR Blaster that allows you to control other devices connected on Sony TV with a single Sony remote.

Nevertheless, it is in accordance with that advantage of performance and features that offered, especially about their picture quality. With X1 Extreme engine as its image processor and powered by the advantage on some technology like X-tended Dynamic Range Pro, Slim backlight Drive, X930E series offers more picture quality closer to clarity of HDR 4K quality. Additionally, Dual Database processing also makes it offers better performance when they are inputted by non HDR contents or contents with lower resolution than 4K. Additionally, more hundreds dollar that you spend for X930E is also for its advantages on sound quality. Meanwhile, the excepting of what we have discussed a lot above, Sony X900E and X930E offer similar performance such as their motion handling, input lag, smart TV performance, even for their downsides about their poor side viewing angle and lack of 3D technology.
So, which is a better choice between them? Considering X930E is sold about hundreds dollar more expensive than X900E for both 55 inch and 65 inch, of course the decision comes back to your according to your budget and preferences. If you care about picture quality and don’t mind to spend more hundred dollars, both XBR55X930E and XBR65X930E certainly is a better option for you. Nevertheless, both of XBR55X900E and XBR65X900E is also not a bad choice considering it also offers stunning picture quality for its class.
