Performance of Sony XBR55X930D vs Samsung UN55KS9000
Great HDR performance that offered by Samsung UN55KS9000 and Sony XBR55X930D is undoubtedly. This is evidenced by obtaining Ultra HD Premium Certification by each of them. As we know, Ultra HD Premium Certification is an award for a HDR TV where its display specs meet all of the minimum standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD Alliance. This would be like a differentiator between a HDR TV which able to display HDR contents fully or not.
As we know, the one of the most important aspects of picture quality is black level and native contrast ratio. For this point, black level reached by them is very deep, at least for LED TV. With all technologies that support them, Samsung UN55KS9000 can reach about 0.014 nits of black level with native contrast ratio about 6800:1 while Sony XBR55X930D can reach about 0.035 nits of black level with native contrast ratio about 2800:1. You need to know, the deeper black level and the higher native contrast ratio, the picture produced will looks better. From here we can see the picture that displayed on the screen of UN55KS9000 will look more amazing than what displayed on the screen of XBR55X930D. But even so, although black level reached by XBR55X930D is not as deep as what reached by UN55KS9000, but at least it is still lower than 0.05 nits of minimum black level required by HDR 10. This indicates black level and contrast ratio delivered by XBR55X930D is quite enough for displaying HDR 10 contents fully.

With quantum dot behind Samsung U55KS9000 and TriLuminos Display behind Sony XBR55X930D, they can cover more than 90% of DCI color space, a minimum color gamut required by HDR 10. Or precisely, UN55KS9000 covers about 95% of DCI P3 color space while XBR55X930D covers about 93%of DCI P3 Color space. It is quite enough to display HDR 10 contents fully without any issue on color reproduction. Moreover it also excellent for displaying SDR contents that required Rec.709 color coverage. Again, UN55KS9000 is slight superior to XBR55X930D in term of color gamut. Additionally, both of them also support 10 bit panel where with about 1.07 billion shades of color, color gradient of the picture produced is very smooth without gradation or color banding.
With the superiority in black level, contrast, peak brightness, and color coverage, Samsung UN55KS9000 certainly offers better picture quality in HDR or SDR. But this doesn’t mean what offered by XBR55X930D is poor. By meeting all minimum standardization of HDR 10 or compliant with Ultra HD Premium Certification, this already indicates stunning picture quality delivered by XBR55X930D.
But unfortunately, the amazing picture quality displayed on their screen will reduced started at 20 degrees off center and front. This is due both of them use VA panel that has narrow viewing angle as its native characteristic. And of course, the right setting between a TV and your seat is highly recommended to get the best viewing.
Both of them equipped with great performance UHD Up-scaling engine. This allows you to still enjoy video contents with lower resolution in 4K quality. This is still very important because most of the contents that available in the market still have lower resolution than 4K and even if there are a lot 4K contents available, this is required high speed internet connection and much wider bandwidth than if you streaming 1080p contents or lower. Compare between them, Sony XBR55X930D offers slight better performance than Samsung UN55S9000 particularly at lower resolution like DVDs or SD TV. Although the final images that resulted is the same good, but picture displayed on the screen of XBR55X930d looks slightly sharper. For upper resolution, what produced by them is not much different, that is the same sharp with small details look clearly.
This performance has to do when they are playing fast contents like sport or video games and when playing 24p movies. As we see on comparison table above, Samsung UN55KS9000 is powered by Supreme Motion Rate240 based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel while Sony XBR55X930D is powered by Motion Flow XR960 also based native 120 Hz. When playing 24p movies like Blu-Ray Movies or even via 60i signals like movies from Satellite TV and via 60p signals like from streaming devices, both of them offer perfect performance. This means there is no judder on the picture that produced at all sources. Additionally, when they are playing video with fast scenes both of them also offer good performance. This means there is not much motion blur appear. But even so, although both of them based on the same 120 Hz refresh rate panel, compare between them, XBR55X930D offers faster pixel response time than UN55KS9000. This means in certain scenes, XBR55X930D offers smoother picture than UN55KS9000.
Both of them are equipped with 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports as their major connectivity. Additionally, there is also 1 RF, 1 Ethernet and 1 Digital Audio out (Optical) behind them. The difference between them is about Component In, Composite In, and Analog Audio Out where XBR55X930D is equipped with these inputs/output while UN55KS9000 is not. The other difference is where all of these ports are located. On XBR55X930D, all of connectivity ports are located on rear and side of the panel, while for UN55KS9000, All HDMI Ports, 2 USB Ports, and RF In are located on separated box called “One Connect Box”. This gives a benefit when there is HDMI firmware update in future so you just need to upgrade or change this box without change a TV. Additionally, talking about input lag, both of them also offer low input lag at 1080p and 4K resolution that means both of them is great used for games. But compare between them, input lag of UN55KS9000 is lower than XBR55X930D, especially at 4K HDR source where input lag of XBR55X930D is too high for HDR games. So overall, although both of them has low input lag and is great for video games, with lower input lag, UN55KS9000 is more comfortable to be used for video games than XBR55X930D, especially for competitive and HDR games.
The difference between them is very clear where Sony XBR55X930D is equipped with active 3D technology while Samsung UN55KS9000 is not equipped with 3D technology. Talking about 3D performance offered by XBR55X930D, it is great. But as often happens when 3D is activated, the picture will look slightly dimmed so you need to increase “brightness”. One of the advantages, active 3D technology offers full resolution image for each eyes. And although it is not as comfortable to watch as passive 3D, but at least there is no flicker and crosstalk on 3D picture produced. Of course it is better than what you see in the previous years where your comfort is slightly disturbed when playing 3D movies on active 3D TV. But unfortunately, there is no active 3D gasses included inbox, so to be able t enjoy 3D movies, you must by active 3D glasses separately where we know, their price is much more expensive than the price of passive 3D glasses.
Both of them offer the same attractive and responsive Smart TV platform. Samsung UN55KS9000 comes with Tizen OS while Sony XBR55X930D comes with Google Android TV as their platform. I don’t discuss in detail about their differences. Although both of them has intuitive user interface, but Tizen OS is more simple and more comfortable to use than Android TVs. Both of them also offer fast and responsive performance. Selecting between apps is very quick, so does about the loading in time of an app, it is also very quick. Additionally, both of them are also equipped with tons of useful and attractive apps and features like Netflix, YouTube, HuluPLus, Web Browser, Apps Store, Cloud Games Apps, and many more. But even so, although both of them equally offer a lot of and complete apps, but Tizen is more focused on what people want from Smart TV.
As their controller, Samsung UN55KS9000 is equipped with Samsung Smart Controller. The buttons is very minimal and there is no “number buttons. Additionally, there is also no “pint and click” function like on previous “Samsung Smart Touch Remote”. But even so, voice command is still retained and it can serve as universal remote where it is embedded a lot of Infra Red Database for controlling other devices connected onto TV. Meanwhile, Sony XBR55X930D is used basic remote where there are a lot of buttons and navigation of the different TV menus is straightforward. Like UN55KS9000, XBR55X930Dis equipped with IR blaster that allows you to control other devices connected onto your TV with Soy Remote.

Samsung UN55KS9000 is equipped with 4.1 channels speaker with 2 built-in woofers and powered by total 60 watts speaker power while Sony XBR55X930D is equipped with 4.0 channel speaker powered by 30 watts speaker power. There is no built in woofer behind XBR55X930D. This makes low frequency or bass performance offered by them is heard much different where UN55KS9000 offers much more steady bass than. In other hand, UN55KS9000 also offers much better frequency response than XBR55X930D that makes its sound quality is much better. Sound quality offered by XBR55X930D is really poor so you need to add external sound bar for improving its sound quality. Meanwhile, what offered by UN55KS9000 is quite impressive for a slim TV, but for you who care about sound quality, the addition of external sound bar is still recommended.
