Differences between Sony XBR65Z9D and XBR65X930D
As we have mentioned above, the major difference between Sony XBR65X930D and XBR65Z9D are about their picture engine and backlight technology. Nevertheless, these differences makes XBR65Z9D is sold more than double of XBR65X930D. At a glance, they are powered by the same picture engine, that is 4K HDR Processor X1 Engine, but there is an additional letter “Extreme” for image processor of XBR65Z9D. The difference between X1 and X1 Extreme is about the technologies which embedded in them. Inside X1 engine, there are Object-Based HDR Remaster, Super Bit mapping 4K HDR, and Dynamic Contrast Enhancer Technologies which embedded while inside X1 Extreme, in addition to technologies embedded on X1 Processor, there are two additional technologies embedded those are Precision Color Mapping and Dual Data Base Processing. Sony even claim X1 Extreme offers 40% more real-time image processing than X1 Processor.
The other major difference between Sony XBR65Z9D and XBR65X930D is about their backlight technology. Sony XBR65X930D uses Edge LED backlight with local dimming that controlled by Slim Backlight Drive Technology. Meanwhile, XBR65Z9D is powered by Full Array LED Backlight with Local Dimming technologies that controlled by Master Backlight technology. That make amazingly from FALD technology behind XBR65Z9D, it has more than 600 dimming zones controlled by Sony’s unique algorithm. As we know, the more dimming zones of local dimming technology of TV, black level and contrast reached is deeper and stronger. With 600 zones, there is no LED TVs that has dimming zones as many as it. As the comparison, Samsung KS9800 has only about 300 dimming zones while Vizio P series has only about 120 dimming zones. The result, black level and peak brightness reached by XBR65Z9D is really exceptional for LED TVs, even claimed close to OLED TV. The result, black level reached by XBR65Z9D is far deeper than XBR65X930D, as well as peak brightness reached, it also far brighter.
As the note, the deepest black level reached by XBR65X930D is about 0.035 nits with peak brightness about 1050 nits. Meanwhile, XBR65Z9D can reach about 0.0003 nits of black level with peak brightness about 1800 nits. Even by what reached by XBR65Z9D, this makes it as a LED TV in 2016 with deepest black level and brightest peak white. With their significant difference in brightness level and we assume their other display specs are the same like color gamut and depth of color, of course the picture displayed on the screen of XBR65Z9D looks much more amazing than XBR65X930D. The dark scene will revealed more as well as detail picture in shadow or sun highlighted effect, it will looks more detail in the screen XBR65Z9D. But even so, this doesn’t mean picture performance of XBR65X930D is bad. We must remember, Sony XBR65X930D is also certified by Ultra HD Premium Certification that means all of their display specs meet the minimum standardization for displaying HDR 10 contents fully. Although not as amazing as Sony XBR65Z9D, XBR65X930D already deliver stunning picture quality in HDR and SDR quality where for most of people, this is more than enough.
The other difference between them is about the level of Motion Flow Rate technology while Sony XBR65Z9D comes with Motion Flow XR1440 while XBR65X930D comes with MotionFlowXR960. But essentially, these technologies based on the same native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. The result, ZBR65Z9D may offer better performance when handling motion blur, 24p movies, and motion interpolation at 30 fps and 60 fps, but because XBR65X930D already offer good performance for these cases, this makes these differences are not too major.
Audio equipment also becomes the difference between them. Sony XBR65X930D comes with 4. Ch speaker system with 30 watts total power output while XBR65ZD comes with 2 channels speaker system with 2 watt total power output. But even so, their audio performance is equally poor, so to get better sound experience, both of them still need additional external sound bar.
As a top model TVs in the market, both of them have similar downside that is about poor viewing angle. This means, you will enjoy amazing picture quality displayed on their screen if you only watch TV from center and in front of the screen. Started at 20 degrees off center and in front of the screen, the quality of the picture will start to deteriorate and the wider angle you are watching from, the picture will looks worse.
Additionally, the excepting of some features that has great effect on their picture quality, what offered by both of them are almost the same. Both of them equally equipped with great UHD Up-scaling engine called 4K Realty Pro engine that up-scale lower resolution to near 4K quality sharply and clearly with a lot of small details preserved well. Additionally, both of them also equipped with great active 3D technology that allows you to enjoy clear and detail 3D images with tons of depth. Although both of them come with active 3D technology that identical to flicker and crosstalk, but on their screen, flicker and crosstalk can be minimized. The advantage, each of eyes receives full resolution of 3D images. A bit difference is about 3D glasses, where XBR65X930D is not equipped with 3D technology while in the box of XBR65Z9D, there is 3D glasses included.
As their smart TV platform, both of them equally feature Google Android TV as their smart TV platform. The excepting of the controller, this certainly is not far different to Google Android OS on you android Smart phone. Layout and user interface is designed comfortable to use with navigation between different menus is made straight forward. Additionally, like on your android smart phone, there are also Google’s default apps available like Google Play Store, Chrome Cast, Google Voice Search, and more. Most popular apps are also available like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Videos, HuluPLus, and many more. For gamers, both of them also provide Cloud Gaming Service apps like PlayStation Now that allows you to play PlayStation 3 games without a console.
As mentioned above, X1 Extreme processor and FALD controlled by Master backlight drive technology are the main advantages of Sony XBR65Z9D than XBR65X930D. The result, it can deliver far deeper black level and brighter peak lower series XBR65X930D. So, although both of them are already Ultra HD Premium Certification that means both of them can display HDR 10 fully, but with deeper black level and brighter peak brightness, HDR picture displayed on the screen of XBR65Z9D looks far better than XBR65X930D. This also applies when they are displaying SDR contents. Meanwhile, the excepting of picture quality, both of them offer similar performance.
So, which is a better choice between them? If you care about picture quality and don’t mind to spend a lot of money even more than double, you can choose Sony XBR65Z9D as to get a better experience in enjoying 4K HDR entertainment in your home. But if you have limited budget, Sony XBR65X930D is also not a bad choice considering it is also a serious HDR TV that come with Ultra HD premium Certification that means there will no issues when it is displaying HDR contents. Now, the decision comes back to you according to your budget and preferences. But before you decide to choose one of them, there are a lot of opinions from each of their real users where you can make as your further consideration.
