Samsung UN65KS9800 vs UN65KS9500 Review
Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 are the top and second tier of Samsung’s 2016 HDR SUHD TV lineup. If there is LG OLED TV that delivers deepest black level, both of them deliver brightest peak white. One of the major shortcomings of both is no 3D technology behind them. But instead of 3D technology, both Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 offers stunning HDR picture quality in HDR 10 format, an open source to standardize all aspect of HDR set by UHD Alliance. In the market, both of them are sold with difference in price about hundreds dollar and of course this value cannot be said a little. So, what are the advantages of UN65KS9800 than UN65KS9500 considering their difference in price is significant? Let’s discuss one by one about them.

As we see on comparison table above, there are some specs that become the major and minor differences between Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS980 that course has impact on their performance. Let’s discuss one by one their differences and the resulting impact caused by their differences.
As we see on comparison table above, the major difference between them is about their backlight technology where Samsung UN65KS9800 comes with Multi zones full array LED as its backlight technology and UN65KS9500 comes with Edge Lit backlighting. It has an impact on black level, brightness, contrast, and screen uniformity produced by them. The result, UN65KS9800 delivers brighter peak brightness and deeper black level that course also makes its contrast ratio is higher than UN65KS9500. Additionally, black uniformity of UN65KS9800 is also better than UN65S9500. With the advantages on this point, the picture that displayed on 4K screen of UN65KS9800 looks better and more natural with more vibrant color than what produced by Samsung UN65KS9500.
We can see on comparison table above, both of Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 are powered by True Local Dimming (Not Supreme UHD Dimming) called Precision Black. But that sets it apart is about their level where KS9800 comes with precision black pro while KS9500 comes with standard precision black pro. This course is about the number zones of their local dimming where Precision Black pro has more zones than standard precision black. But Samsung did not mention in detail how many zones for each. Theoretically, the more zones of local dimming, the deeper black level reached. This course makes black level reached by UN65KS9800 is deeper than UN65KS9500.
The other difference between Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 is about their level of peak Illuminator. You need to know, it is the Samsung’s proprietary technology that designed to support HDR by boosting the peak brightness so the color contrast will be enhanced and make the images look brighter. Peak illuminator Ultimate usually is applied on Samsung TV with Full Array LED Backlighting while Peak Illuminator Pro is applied for Samsung top model with Edge-Lit Backlighting. The resulted, Samsung TV with Peak Illuminator Ultimate reaches brighter peak white than Samsung TV with Peak Illuminator Pro. With other words, Samsung UN65KS9800 with ultimate version offers brighter peak brightness than UN65KS9500 with Pro version while UN65KS9500 already reaches brighter peak white than most of TVs that available in the market.
With these differences in technology between them, it has a big impact on the color and contrast delivered by them while color contrast is one of most important aspects of picture quality. Without neglecting performance of UN65KS9500, the picture produced by Samsung UN65KS9800 looks more stunning with deeper black level, brighter peak white, and more vibrant color. Furthermore, both of them already support HDR (High Dynamic Range), of course the peak brightness and black level play an important role on HDR quality.
Ignoring their differences about their differences in contrast and brightness, both Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 offers stunning picture quality in HDR or non HDR. As we know, HDR is the main focus of 4K TV in 2016 and like other 4K TVs that released in 2016, Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 also already support HDR. But with the many HDR TVs that released in 2016, this course also makes the users confused which the TV offering really HDR experience or just bring the frill of HDR. Therefore, the number of 4K TV manufacturers formed an alliance called UHD Alliance to set the standardization of HDR format called HDR 10. A 4K TV meet all of the standardization of HDR 10 is entitled to a Ultra HD Premium Certification. With other words, s 4K TV with Ultra HD premium Label, of course it will offer true HDR experience.
There are two standardization of HDR 10 about peak brightness and black level. The first is 1000 nits of peak brightness and 0.05 nits deep level while the second option is 540 nits of peak brightness with 0.005 nits black level. The first option usually is for LED TV while the second option usually is for OLED TV. While for color performance, to get Ultra HD premium certification, a 4K TV must cover more than 90% DCI P3 color space an also support 10 bit depth of color.
In term of peak brightness and black level, Samsung UN65KS9500 can reach lower than 0.05 nits or more precisely is about 0.015 nits. This value certainly is much lower than minimum standardization of HDR 10. While for UN65KS9800, although we have not got a specific data for it, with higher level technology, it certainly can reach deeper black level than UN65KS9500. Moving on peak brightness, UN65KS9500 can reach up to 1490 nits of peak brightness and of course this also far above 100 nits, a standardization of HDR 10 for peak brightness. In other hand, Samsung UN65KS9800 certainly reaches higher nits of peak brightness considering it comes with higher level technology. With other word, both Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 have met the minimum standardization of peak brightness and black level set by UHD Alliance.
Moving on Color Performance, both of them comes with Quantum dot Display claimed deliver wider color gamut coverage than traditional color technology. The resulted, the color gamut delivered by both UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 can cover more than 95% DCI P3 color space. In other hand, both of them also already support 10 bit color, this means they can delivers more than 1 billion shades of color that makes the color gradation looks smoother. Compared to other TV with 8 bit panel that only deliver about 16 millions shades of color.
With all display specs delivered by both Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500, of course they meet all of the minimums standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD alliance and entitle to get Ultra HD premium Certification. This means, both of them can display HDR 10 contents without any issues. With other words, you will enjoy stunning HDR picture quality on the 4K screen of both UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 like creator intended. But back to the beginning like we have discussed above, because Samsung UN65KS9800 comes with higher display specs in contrast and brightness, of course it also offers better picture quality than UN65KS9500.
The excepting of their difference in technologies that has a great impact on picture quality, especially on contrast and brightness, Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 offers virtually identical in other aspects of 4K entertainment. Let’s discuss one by one about their similarity.
Side Viewing Angle
As we know, the use of backlight behind LED TV makes picture deterioration if viewed from side viewing angle and this is the original characteristics of VA panel. Therefore, both of Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 come with curved panel claimed can provide wider range of viewing angle than flat panel. But in reality, the improvement achieved in term of side viewing angle is not as significant as what offered by IPS panel. This means, the use of curved panel didn’t give significant improvement on side viewing angle. The contrast and color still looks degraded started at 20 degrees off center and front. In fact, the significant impact of curved panel precisely is the picture will look bigger.
One of the downsides of all of Samsung TVs is they are always difficulties in controlling motion blur. Although both Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 are powered by Supreme Motion Rate 240 technology based on native 120 Hz refresh ate panel, but it is not still quite enough to match their competitor like Sony X930D or LG UH9500 series. There may not many motion blur appears when they used for watching videos with fast motion scenes like sport or video games, but their competitor top model LG or Sony 4K LED TVs offers better performance. But even so, when playing 24p contents like Blu Ray movies or 24p contents via 60p or 60i signals like from PC or satellite box, both of them show perfect performance with no judder noticeable.
The identical performance is also shown by both Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 when it did a good job when up-scaling video contents from any sources to 4K quality. SD or 480p sources like DVDs look clear and details in 4K quality on each of their screen as good as when the sources is HD or 720p contents like from Cable/ Satellite TVs. The better performance is shown by them when the source is 1080p like from Blu Ray player. The picture resulted looks very clear and details as good as when the sources is native 4K. This even is much better than when these full HD contents are played on full HD TV as their native community. With this great performance of UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 in UHD Up-scaling, this course allows you to still enjoy all of videos contents in near 4K quality as you would expect when buying a 4K TV, though until now, the availability of 4K contents in the market is not as many as video contents with lower resolution.
This is one of attractive thinks of Samsung UN65KS9800 and Samsung UN65KS9500. As their platform, both of them feature Tizen OS. In my opinion, it is one of the best Smart TV platforms in 2016. In term of appearance, there is not many different than last year version where there is Smart Hub that allows you to manage your favorite apps. But in term of performance, there is some improvements that makes its performance better than previous version. One setback is about their processor where top level JS9500 is already powered by an Octa core processor while UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 go back to use quad core processor. But even so, there is no significant impact that happened.
In 2016, Tizen OS comes with all of the most popular 4K and media apps. There are Web Browser, Smart View, Premium VoD service support HDR, and many more. A new feature is bout cloud gaming where it allows you to play tons of attractive games without a console. You just need a game controller and internet connection. The other benefit, to play a cloud games, you will be chased pay per title games. This means it is more efficient and cost-effective compared to similar service that will charge you with monthly fee.
And finally, to make you easier and more comfort when selecting between apps, playing apps, surfing on the internet and more, both Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 includes Samsung Smart Touch remote in the box. Like LG Magic Remote, there is also most useful function “point and click” that has a function like mouse on the computer.
A bit difference in here is about their audio channel where UN65KS9800 is equipped with 4.2 channel speaker system while UN65KS9500 is equipped with 4.1 speaker system. Both of them are powered by 60 watts power amplifier with 10 watts for each speaker. Although their number of channel of their woofer is different, but we all know, sound separation on low frequency or bass doesn’t have significant impact on overall sound quality so we can ignore about it.
Discuss about their performance, sound quality delivered by each of them is above average. The sound separation between each channel of mid frequency and high frequency is very noticeable. Furthermore, there is built in woofer that makes low frequency or bass heard powerful. Overall, for slim TV like UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800, their audio performance is very impressive. But compared t stand alone sound bar, this is not quite enough to match them. To get best experience in sound quality, the addition of a standalone sound bar still needed.
The major connectivity of Samsung UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500 is complete. There are 4 HDMI and 3 USB ports as their connectivity. Additionally, there are also 1 RF in, 1 Ethernet ports and RS 232. I don’t see Composite IN and Component IN connection on UN65KS9800 and UN65KS9500. This means, your old devices where AV or Component as their major connectivity cannot be used for UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800. But unlike most of TV where their major connectivity ports are installed on their rear panel, the major connectivity of UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 installed on upgradable One Connect Box. This means, if in the future there is new version of connectivity, like new version of USB or HDMI ports, you just need to upgrade your One connect box without having to replace your TV.
As w have discussed above, Multi zones Full Array Direct LED backlighting is the major difference between Samsung UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 in addition to there is also different level on some of their technologies like precision black and Peak Illuminator. The impact is on their black level and peak brightness and also contrast ratio. Because of contrast is one of most important aspects of picture quality, this difference makes the picture that displayed on 4K screen of UN65KS9800 looks better than UN65KS9500 while the picture produced by UN65KS9500 is including one of the best among 4K TVs released in 2016. Ignoring their differences, display specs of both UN65KS9500 and UN65KS9800 meet the standardization of HDR 10 set by UHD alliance, whether it is about black level, peak brightness, color gamut and depth of color. This allows you t enjoy HDR contents stunningly on each of their screen.
So, which is a better choice between them? As mentioned, in the market, both of them is sold with difference in price about hundreds dollar where UN65KS9800 is sold more expensive than UN65KS9500. But I think their difference in price is comparable to their difference in performance and features. But even so, because Samsung UN65KS9500 already met the standardization of HDR 10, I think UN65KS9500 is a better choice. In addition to you can enjoy stunning HDR quality you also will save about hundreds dollars of your money. But even so, if you don’t mind to spend your extra money to get the brightest TV in 2016, this certainly is not a wrong choice. Now the decision comes back to you according to your need and budgets.
