In the market, both of these Sony 65 Inch X930D and X850D are sold with very significant difference in price where XBR65X930D as a higher series is sold more expensive. The primary difference between them is about 3D technology where XBR65X930D is powered by active 3D technology while for XBR65X850D, there is no 3D technology behind it. In addition 3D technology, of course, there are some others differences that makes they sold with significant difference in price. So, how the performance of both and is their difference in price comparable to their different performance? Let’s discuss a lot about them.

There are three major differences between Sony XBR65X930D and XBR65X850D that has big impact on each of their performance includes 3D technology, X-tended Dynamic Range and Panel Type. XBR65X930D comes with 3D technology and X-Tended Dynamic Range while there are no both technologies behind XBR65X850D. While about panel type, XB65X850D comes with IPS panel while XBR65X930D comes with VA Panel. The impact? Let’s discuss one by one.

3D Technology

About 3D technology, their difference is very clear, XBR65X930D comes with active 3D technology while XBR65X850d is without 3D technology. Out of their differences about 3D, 3D performance that offered by XBR65X930D is great, clear, and with tons of depth. There is almost no crosstalk appears. Like most 3D TVs, when displaying 3D images, the picture will look slight darker, so you need to increase the brightness of your TV. The benefits of active 3D technology, each of your eyes will receive full resolution of 3D images but this will cause flicker and crosstalk appeared. Of course this makes active 3D is not as comfort as passive 3D. But unfortunately, Sony XBR65X930D is not equipped with Active 3D glasses in its buying package, so for enjoying 3D images, you must buy active 3D glasses separately that certainly its price is not as cheap as passive 3D glasses.

Picture Quality

As we see on comparison table above, Sony XBR65X930D is powered by X-tended Dynamic Range pro Technology while XBR65X850D is not. You need to know, it is a unique backlighting algorithm designed by Sony to improve black level and peak bright, so the shadow detail and black will be more revealed. And of course, this will makes increases the quality of HDR and also makes the color looks more vibrant.

As mentioned, Sony XBR65X850D comes with IPS Panel type while XBR65X930D comes with VA panel. Each of these panel technologies has advantages and disadvantages than each other. As we know, IPS panel offer wider range of viewing angle but in other side, it makes black level and contrast deterioration in dark/dimmed room. Otherwise, VA panel offers brighter peak white and deeper black level but in other hand, it side viewing angle is limited. Applied on them, SBR65X850D offers wider range of side viewing angle, but its contrast level and black level is weaker than XBR65X930D. Otherwise, with VA Panel, XBR65X930D offers deeper black level and brighter peak white that of course will has impact on the picture quality.

LG IPS Panel

The differences about panel type and X-tended Dynamic Range between Sony XBR65X850D and XBR65X930D have a big impact on the picture quality delivered by each of them. The only advantage of XBR65X850D is about viewing angle where it offers much wider viewing angle than XBR65X930D. But in other hand, the use of IPS panel makes picture quality deterioration particularly in dark/dimmed room. This can be seen from picture performance that offered by them.

Talking about picture quality especially HDR because both of them already support HDR, the performance of XBR65X930D is much better what reached by XBR65X850D moreover I comes with X-tended dynamic range technology. From trustworthy unofficial source, the statistic prove, XBR65X930D can reach lower than 0.035 nits of black level while XBR65X850D only reach 0.084 nits of black level. While minimum requirements of black level set by UHD Alliance to get Ultra HD premium certification is 0.05 nits. Otherwise, for peak brightness, Sony XBR65X850D only can reach 422 nits of peak brightness on 2% window while XBR65X930D can reach 1054 nits of peak brightness. You need to know, to get Ultra HD certification, UHD Alliance has set 1000 nits of peak brightness that must be reached by 4K HDR TVs.

From this statistic, we can conclude that XBR65X940D meet the standardization set by UHD alliance for peak brightness and black level while XBR65X850D doesn’t.  With other words, in displaying HDR contents, X930D series does its job much better than X850D series. But even so, although not the best, for a fellow IPS TV, the performance that offered by XBR65X850D can be said great.

Sound Quality

The audio system of Sony XBR65X930D and XBR65X850D is also different. XBR65X850D is equipped with 2 channel speaker system with 20 watts total power while XBR65X930D is powered by 4 channel speaker system with total power 30 watts. The result, of course XBR65X930D offers slight better audio performance than XBR65X850D. But because there is no built woofer behind them, the performance of both in low frequency or bass is minimal. To get best experience in Sound Quality, the addition of extra sound bar or other audio system devices is indispensable.

But of course, HDR is not just peak brightness and black level. To get Ultra HD certification, UHD alliance has set 90% of DCI P3 color space and 10 bit depth of color for a 4K TVs. With TriLuminos Display, both Sony XBR65X930D and XBR65X850D can cover more than 90% of DCI P3 color space or more precisely is 93% of DCI P3 color space. Moving on depth of color, both of these Sony 65 Inch X930D and X850D series already supports 10 bit. This means both of them can deliver more than 1 billion shades of color. This makes color gradation of them looks very smooth. Compare to a 4K TV with 8 bit depth of color that delivers only around 16 million shades of color. And separate from their differences about contrast level delivered by them, this makes both of these Sony 65 Inch HDR TV delivers stunning color performance.

UHD Up-scaling Engine

In last couple years, Sony always becomes the best in UHD Up-scaling engine performance. Combination of X1 and X-Reality pro engine behind Sony XBR65X930D and XBR65X850D make them produce stunning picture quality in 4K quality. No matter the resolution of the sources, you will enjoy them in 4K quality smoothly and clearly. When up-scaling 480p sources like DVD movies, both of them do their jobs very well, as well as when up-scaling from 720p source like from disk media or cable TV. Furthermore when the sources are 1080p like from Blu-Ray, the result is excellent even much better and smoother than they are played on full HD 1080p TV. With this great performance, you don’t need to worry when the availability of 4K contents in the market is still scarce until now.

Motion Control

In controlling fast motion images, both of Sony XBR65X930D and XBR65X850D show similar performance. Both of them are powered by Motion Flow XR960 based on native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. The result, they deliver fast pixel response time. Although fast motion scenes looks a little blurry but doesn’t create double effect as happened in most of Samsung TVs. Additionally, both of them also do good job when handling 24p contents like from Blu-Ray or Cable/Satellite TV. With great performance delivered by them, this makes you more comfort when you are watching your favorite sports program or playing video games.

Smart TV (3.8/5) (3.8/5)
Audio Performance (3.2/5) (2.5/5)
3D Performance (4.5/5) (0/5)

In addition 3D technology as their main difference, picture quality also becomes a major differences between Sony XBR65X930D and XBR65X850D. The main key that distinguishes them are about IPS panel on XBR65X850D and X-tended Dynamic Range on XBR65X850D. With IPS panel, XBR65X850D offers wider viewing angle than XBR65X930D but in other hand, it makes black level and contrast ratio deterioration in dark/dimmed room. So, although XBR65X850D has supports HDR, but its display specs don’t meet the standardization of Ultra HD Premium set by UHD Alliance for black level and peak brightness. In other hand, with great display specs like we have discussed above, XBR65X930D is eligible to get Ultra HD Premium label because all of their display specs meet the standardization set by UHD Alliance.  In term of color reproduction, both of XBR65X85D and XBR65X930D delivers wide color gamut with 10 bit depth of color and meet what set by UHD alliance for color gamut and depth of color. With their different performance in contrast and black level, this course makes XBR65X940D offers more stunning HDR picture quality than XBR65X850D. Another bit difference is about their sound quality.

The excepting of mentioned above, XBR65X850D and XBR65X930D offers virtually identical performance. Motion Control, UHD-Up-scaling, they offer the same great performance. SO does about Smart TV, with Android TV as their platform, they offer attractive and responsive smart TV that is no inferior to competitor like LG with WebOS 3.0 or Samsung with Tizen Os.

With the difference in performance as mentioned above, Sony XBR65X930D is sold about hundreds more expensive than XBR65X850D.  This value of course is commensurate with the advantages that offered. So, which is a better choice between them? If you have more budget, of course XBR65X930D is a better choice. With spending about hundreds dollar more, you will get tru HDR experience, great 3D performance, and great performance in other apps or features. But even so, XBR65X850D is also not a bad choice because for a fellow IPS TV, its performance in contrast and black level can be said great and quiet enough to match the competitor LG UH8500 series that also comes with IPS panel.
